The St. Marys Area Dutch gymnastics squad placed second at the Central Pa. Gymnastics League held Saturday at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
The Bellefonte squad won the title with 137.125 points, followed by St. Marys with 129.225, Altoona 127.350, DuBois 117.875 and Ridgway 104.350.
â€śI was very pleased with the way the team performed at this championship meet,â€ť said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless. â€śThey did well, although we did have some shaky moments during the meet, but the team was able to keep it together and push through and snatch the second place spot.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Elk County Catholic Crusaders won the Allegheny Mountain League boys' basketball championship with a 65-55 victory over Ridgway Saturday night in the Dutch Oven at St. Marys Area High School.
It is Elk County Catholic's second consecutive league championship and capped a week in which the Crusaders defeated Brookville, Bradford, DuBois Central Catholic and Ridgway.
ST. MARYS - Ashley Wilsonâ€™s foul shot with three seconds remaining gave the Kane Lady Wolves a 40-39 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders and the Allegheny Mountain League championship Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for most of the evening. The Lady Crusaders held a 39-37 lead with 51 seconds left. A field goal by Kaneâ€™s Drew Victory tied the game at 39 with 34 seconds left, setting up Wilsonâ€™s foul shot.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to tonightâ€™s Allegheny Mountain League championship game by defeating the DuBois Central Cardinals 49-42 in overtime Friday at the ECCHS gym.
The Crusaders will meet the Ridgway Elkers who defeated the Johnsonburg Rams 56-38 last night at Ridgway for the league title. The game is set for 8 p.m. at St. Marys Area High School.
DuBOIS - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead on Friday evening in the AML semifinal game against the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals and never looked back, as they won by a 40-29 score to advance to the championship game tonight at St. Marys Area.
The Elk Catholic girls were the No. 2 team out to the AML North and the DuBois Central Catholic girls were the No. 1 team out of the AML South.
RIDGWAY â€“ Backed by a 23-point performance from senior Kayla Hoohuli, the visiting Lady Dutch (21-1) nearly doubled Ridgway's (1-21) output Friday night in a 70-37 victory over the Lady Elkers.
"I thought we ran the court pretty well and played man-to-man defense very well," said St. Marys head girls' varsity basketball coach Bob Swanson after capping off a 21-1 season. "We tried a couple zones but Ridgway shot the ball well [Friday night] and I think they're a much-improved ball club.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team raised their record to 20-1 on the season with a 45-30 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven on Senior Night.
The Lady Dutch opened a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and coasted the rest of the way to their 10th straight win.
â€śI was happy that we won, but I wasnâ€™t real happy with the way we played. The intensity wasnâ€™t there and we didnâ€™t handle the ball real well,â€ť said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
â€śOn the bright side, a lot of kids saw some valuable action,â€ť he added.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Rams got 27 total points from their two departing seniors on Senior Recognition Night en route to a 47-45 victory over visiting St. Marys.
Facing a 1-point deficit after three quarters of play, the Rams were able to claw their way back to secure the win.
Despite giving up a score to St. Marysâ€™ Jordan Weinzierl to open up the fourth quarter with the Dutch on top 36-33, Johnsonburg head boysâ€™ varsity basketball coach Bill Shuey said he did not count his team out of the contest.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad rallied to defeat the Redbank Valley Bulldogs by a 30-29 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch were trailing 29-12 with three matches remaining. At 171 pounds, Dutchman Kyle Wolfel pinned Matt Hetrick at the 2:51 mark, cutting the Bulldogsâ€™ lead to 29-18. At 189 pounds, Dutchman Joe McLaughlin pinned Corey Cyphert at the 2:16 mark of their match to make the score 29-24. At 215 pounds, SMAâ€™s Jimmy Antonelli pinned Braden Bowser at the 3:38 mark of their match, giving the Dutch the 30-29 win.
The Bradford Area High Lady Owls used the foul line to hand the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders a 35-30 setback in a District Nine League game played at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the Elk Catholic Campus on Tuesday evening. The Lady Owls were outscored from the field 27 to 20, but used a 15-for-22 night at the foul line to pull out a five-point victory over the Lady Crusaders.
