SHEFFIELD Â â€” After a flat start on Saturday afternoon at Sheffield Area High School, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders used a strong second half to record an 18-0 win over the Wolverines and improve to 2-0 on the season.
While it rained periodically throughout the contest, the weather did not seem to have much of an impact on the game. ECC coach Travis Skrzypek blamed his squadâ€™s first-half struggles on a lack of motivation throughout the week.
â€śWhen you practice flat all week and youâ€™re flat before the game, you normally play flat,â€ť Skrzypek said.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team captured the 16th annual Elk County Volleyball Tournament championship on Saturday by defeating St. Marys Area in the championship match.
Elk Catholic defeated St. Marys in two games, 25-13 and 25-15.
The Ridgway Lady Elkers took third place by defeating the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 30-18 score in the consolation match.
Crusaders win Elk County Soccer Tournament

RIDGWAY â€” The Elk County Catholic Crusaders won the Elk County Soccer Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Redbank Valley Saturday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
"I think the kids are happy to carry on a tradition," Elk County Catholic coach Adam Bailey said.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team improved their record to 2-0 on the season with a 9-1 victory over the Keystone Lady Panthers Saturday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
The Lady Dutch jumped out to the early lead as they led 4-0 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Caley Keister scored at the 38:51 mark of the game, giving St. Marys the early 1-0 lead.
Approximately two minutes later, Kaitlyn Barackman gave the Lady Dutch the 2-0 lead at the 36:47 mark.
At the 34:44 mark, Keister scored her second goal as she scored on a direct kick, 3-0.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 33-7 victory over the Keystone Panthers Friday on Elementary Night at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Dutch scored in every quarter last night with the exception of the fourth on their way to the victory.
â€śWe did a much better job this week than we did last week,â€ť said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. â€śWe played as a team this week and we came in with a good attitude. But we have a long way to go.â€ť
Crusaders to meet Redbank Valley today at noon, Dutch play Ridgway at 10 a.m.
FOX TWP. â€“Â The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the title game of the Elk County Boys' Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 win over St. Marys Area in a first-round game played Friday afternoon at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township.
Both keepers stayed on their toes throughout the first half, keeping the game scoreless. Elk was able to score a pair of goals in the second half to come away with the win.
"It was nice to see our team get going in the second half," said ECC coach Adam Bailey.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Thursday night at the SMAHS â€śDutch Ovenâ€ť. The Lady Dutch are now 0-2 on the year.
The Lady Crusaders won the first set by a 25-14 score. They took the second set 25-23 and won the third set 25-20 to win the match.
The Elk Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team picked up an 8-1 win over St. Marys Area on Thursday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks.
"Everyone at today's match witnessed some great tennis between two very good tennis teams. The weather was nice, the singles matches were well played, and it was another really good day for District 9 tennis. St. Marys is a nice team and they played very well today," said ECC coach Pete Meier.
Elk Catholic's lone loss of the day came at first singles as St. Marys Area's Amy Orr defeated Laira Reuscher 6-1, 7-5.
The Elk County Catholic High School gold team remained undefeated with a 199-268 win over Kane on Wednesday afternoon at Bavarian Hills Golf Course in St. Marys.
Elliott Struble was the medalist of the day with a two-over-par round of 37.
The low scorer for Kane was Jamie Rook with a 45.
Drew Meyer shot a 39 for the Crusaders, Jess Jaynes recorded a 40, Bruno Cavalline had a 41, and Brandon Schlimm finished with a 42.
Also for the Crusaders, Mitchell Struble had a 43, Kristy Hanes shot a 47, and Garrett Reuscher recorded a 52.
The 19th annual Elk County Youth Field Day is being held at the St. Marys Sportsmenâ€™s Club on Sept. 15 for all youths, ages 10 to 14. There at least five donated prints being awarded with three of the prints pictured above. Opportunities to win are available from any committee member, as well as various places in the county.
There will be an Elk County Youth Field Day meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Marys Sportsmenâ€™s Club.
