The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team raised their record to 6-9 on the year with a 57-9 victory over the Cameron County Raiders Saturday at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch received six forfeits on Saturday, with six matches being wrestled. There were no matches at 103 and 152.
âThe kids that wrestled did a decent job,â said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
The big match was at 285 with Hoy. He did what we call âworking for free,â then got the stalling call that turned out to be big in that match,â said Surra. âKevin (Hoy) learns with every match and is doing a nice job.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team held off the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen to record a 43-39 District 9 League win last night at the ECCHS gym.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch registered a hard-fought 46-35 victory over the Bradford Area Lady Owls last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The victory clinched the District 9 League title for the Lady Dutch. St. Marys is now 8-1 in league play with one league game remaining, to be played on Saturday night when they host Elk Catholic.
Last nightâs game was a close affair until the fourth quarter, when St. Marys outscored Bradford by a 17-8 margin. Eight of the Lady Dutchâs 17 points in the final period came from the free-throw line, where they were 18 of 26 for the game.
The Punxsutawney Chuck wrestling squad handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 34-30 loss Wednesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The match saw the Chucks open a 22-9 lead, only to see the Dutchmen come back to take a 24-22 lead with four matches remaining. Punxsy picked up two decisions and a pin to record the victory.
âThe team didnât get it done tonight. Punxsutawney wrestled to win,â said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. âPunxsy had all the excuses, but they stepped up and got the job done - we didnât.
ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area swim teams hosted the Central Mountain squads last night at the SMAHS natatorium.
The Dutchmen came away with a 102-59 victory which improved their record to 6-1, while the Lady Dutch won 93-73 and are now 4-3 for the season.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen celebrated Senior Players Night by recording a 52-47 victory over the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks in a District Nine League game held at the Dutch Oven at St. Marys Area High School.
"This was a big win for us, especially coming off the tough loss on Monday night at Bradford," said Coach Mark Guido of the Flying Dutch. "We wanted this to be a special night for our seniors, as they were honored in the pre-game ceremony, then came out and played a great ball game.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team raised their record to 17-1 overall with a 63-48 victory over the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks last night at Punxsy.
The Lady Dutch took charge early as they outscored Punxsy by a 20-6 margin in the first eight minutes of play. They led 36-17 at the half.
âI thought we played pretty well defensively in the first half and Mandy Gerarge played well defensively against Punxsyâs center, Shawnna Crago,â said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team raised their District 9 League record to 5-2 with a 41-24 victory over the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks last night at Punxsutawney.
The Lady Crusaders were able to take a 23-13 lead at the half. In the second half, Elk Catholic outscored their hosts by an 18-11 margin to come out on top 41-24.
âWe had very good interior defense tonight,â said ECCHS Coach Ken Pistner. âWe protected the ball well tonight, as we only committed 12 turnovers.
âWe also had a balanced scoring attack.â
The Bradford Owls handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team a 51-47 District 9 League setback last night at Bradford Area High School.
The game was tied at 37 after three quarters of play. In the final eight minutes, the Owls outscored the Dutchmen 14-10 to win the game.
âIt was a bad night all the way around,â said Dutch coach Mark Guido.
âWe didnât convert our free throws,â he said, noting that his team was five of 15 from the charity stripe.
âThey (Bradford) did a nice job of shutting down our scorers,â added Guido.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball squad rolled to its 16th victory on Saturday night as they defeated the visiting Clearfield Area High Lady Bisons by a 75-34 score in a non-league game played at SMAHS's Dutch Oven.
St. Marys took control of the ball game right away, jumping out to a 20-0 lead and basically putting the game away at that point. From then on, Coach Bob Swanson of the Lady Dutch was able to give his bench people plenty of playing time in the rest of the game.
