The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball squad came up short 47-43 to the Bradford Lady Owls on Wednesday evening at ECCHS.
Elk Catholic took an early 15-11 lead in the first period, Bradford rallied to hold a 22-20 advantage at the half, and the Lady Crusaders took the lead back 37-33 headed into the final period of play before the Lady Owls fought back to take the win.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad held on for a 36-31 victory over the Clearfield Bisons last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch had built a 33-18 lead with five bouts remaining. Clearfield was able to cut the Dutch lead to 33-31 going into the final bout of the evening. In that bout, Dutchman Bill Gabor recorded a 7-4 decision over Kody Mayhew to give St. Marys the 36-31 win.
â€śAny time you beat a Clearfield team it is a good win. They are a well-coached team,â€ť said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
ST. MARYS â€“Â It was a classic â€śduel in the poolâ€ť on Monday night when the St. Marys Swim and Dive Team met the Clearfield Bisons head-on at the SMAHS Natatorium. The District 9 drama took many twists and turns, ending in the Dutchmen outlasting the Bisons 105-80 to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Lady Dutch gave it their all but were beaten by the Lady Bisons 124-62, dropping to a 1-2 record.
The St. Marys Lady Dutch used strong perimeter shooting and a fast start to take a 74-32 victory over Ridgway Monday night at Ridgway Area High School.
St. Marys made nine 3-pointers on the game. St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli said the perimeter game is something the Lady Dutch can rely upon.
"What we're looking for is to move the basketball and we'll get our shot and we'll make our shot," Hoohuli said. "We were looking to just move the basketball around and they were able to connect on their shot."
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders raised their Allegheny Mountain League North Division record to 3-1 with a 49-39 victory over the Kane Wolves Monday night at the ECCHS gym.
The game was tied at 12 all after the first eight minutes of play with Elk outscoring Kane 14-12 in the second quarter for a 26-24 halftime lead. The Crusaders outscored the Wolves 23-15 in the second half to win the game.
â€śIt was a good win. Kane played us really hard,â€ť said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub.
â€śI thought we played hard, really scrappy, got on the floor and hustled,â€ť said the coach.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team saw their record slip to 2-4 on the season with a 53-18 loss to the Brookville Raiders last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
While the Dutch took a 15-6 lead through four matches, the only points St. Marys scored after that came on a 3-2 decision by Joe McLaughlin at 182 pounds over Tyler Dombroski.
â€śBrookville is as very good wrestling team. Even with some guys banged up, they wrestled well,â€ť said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra.
BRADFORD - The St. Marys Area High School swim team split their second dual meet of the season when they met the Bradford Owls on Monday afternoon at the Univ. of Pittsburgh at Bradford Natatorium. The Lady Dutch just narrowly missed a win with their final score of 86-84 in favor of the Lady Owls. The Dutchmen notched a decisive victory over the Owls with the final score of 115-48.
The St. Marys Area Dutch gymnastics squad recorded its third victory of the season Tuesday evening by defeating the Ridgway Lady Elkers by a 119.675 to 103.425 score in a meet held at the Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders improved their record to 7-5 on the season with a 51-36 non-league victory over the Curwensville Golden Tide last night at the ECCHS gym.
After trailing 18-17 at the half, Elk Catholic went on to outscore the Golden Tide by a 34-18 margin in the second 16 minutes of play.
â€śTonight was a team effort and a good win,â€ť said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub. â€śWe were able to get away with a poor first half.â€ť
With just under a minute and a half left in the fourth quarter of Tuesday evening's contest, the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen held a slim 37-36 lead over the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks. While the Dutchmen only allowed Punxsy to make one more field goal for the remainder of the game, the Chucks were 6-for-7 from the foul line in the final minute to seal their 44-38 victory.
Still, St. Marys Area coach Mark Guido indicated that he was pleased with his team's effort.
