ECCHS yearbook featured in Jostens Look Book

The yearbook staff at Elk County Catholic High School was recently notified that they have once again been selected to be featured in the Jostens Look Book, this time for their 2013-2014 yearbook.
According to Jostens' website, the Look Book "is a 'best of the best' annual (publication) of creative themes, cool covers, dazzling designs, relevant coverage and storytelling copy and action-packed photography selected from outstanding yearbooks printed by Jostens."
ECC's yearbook was one of 476 selected from around 3,000 submissions.

Registration underway for annual Bunny Hop

Registration is once again underway for the fifth annual Bunny Hop 5K run/walk, and this year's race will be held Saturday, April 4. There is a fee to participate, and all of the funds benefit The Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
On the day of the race, registration will open at 9 a.m. and a 3.2 mile walk will start at 10 a.m. followed by a 5K run at 11 a.m. Individuals who preregister by March 25 will be guaranteed a T-shirt on the day of the race.
Participation has increased each year, and in 2014 around 700 people took part in either the walk or the run.

Community remembers fallen firefighter

CLEARFIELD – Nearly 1,000 family members, friends, and emergency responders throughout the state filled Clearfield Area High School's gym Friday afternoon to bid farewell to the late Jeffrey Scott Buck Jr.
The 18-year-old firefighter died Monday, March 9 from injuries suffered while fighting a fire Tuesday, March 3 in the 700 block of Daisy Street in Clearfield.
He was a senior at Clearfield Area High School and a member of the Lawrence Township Fire Company. Buck was trapped beneath a porch roof that collapsed during the Daisy Street blaze.

St. Marys man arrested after fleeing police

After leading police on a foot pursuit through Brusselles Street traffic, Jeremiah Schuler, 33, of St. Marys was apprehended Tuesday night in the alleyway between Murone's TV & Appliances and The Daily Press offices.
He is charged with the felony offense of flight to avoid apprehension, trial or punishment, as well as misdemeanor offenses of resisting arrest or other law enforcement and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Local author realizes childhood dream

For Melissa Stahli, having children of her own inspired her to realize a childhood dream of her own.
"Ever since I was a child, I was writing," she said. "I have three children and I'm always reading to them. The knowledge that they can get from books is what drove me to do this."
Stahli, who lives in St. Marys, currently has four books published, the most recent of which is "Adventurous Week With Grandpa," her first chapter book.

Pi Day celebrated at SMAHS

Students at St. Marys Area High School celebrated Pi Day a day early on Friday with a special program on Friday afternoon in the school's auditorium. Unlike in past years, this year the entire program was videoed ahead of time and that video was played for students during the assembly.

Plane overturns at St. Marys airport

March 12, 2015

A Stearman biplane flipped over late Thursday morning after landing at St. Marys Municipal Airport.
Crystal Fire Department and St. Marys Ambulance responded to the scene shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday morning along with multiple units from the city police.
The pilot, who was not identified, was not injured in the crash.

Mutual aid, crew support emphasized during CFD report

Crystal Fire Department Chief Bill Kraus presented the department's annual report during a recent St. Marys City Council meeting.
In 2014, the CFD responded to 328 incidents which is an increase of 11 incidents from the previous year.
Fire loss for 2014 included one passenger car and one tractor trailer, both of which were total losses.
Building and content loss was $942,385 while motor vehicle loss totaled $154,000. This brings the CFD's total fire loss for 2014 to $1,096,385 which is an increase of $15,310 from the previous year.

Plane overturns at airport

A plane reportedly overturned late Thursday morning at St. Marys airport.
Emergency responders from Crystal Fire Department and St. Marys Ambulance were at the scene along with multiple units from the St. Marys City Police Department.
