Fire reported at former Buehler Lumber Co. in Ridgway

RIDGWAY – Multiple fire units were called out Tuesday afternoon for a working structure fire at a former Buehler Lumber Co. property listed at 260 W. Main St. in Ridgway.
There was significant smoke damage at the property and flames damaged and nearly melted away a significant portion of the wall panels.

Dutch tennis team advances win with over DCC

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the District 9 Class AA team tournament on Monday with a 4-1 victory over the DuBois Central Cardinals at the SMAHS courts.

Dutch baseball defeats Curwensville 15-2 in six innings

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team picked up their second win of the season Monday when they defeated the Curwensville Golden Tide by a 15-2 score in six innings. The game was played in Curwensville.

ECC softball takes 13-3 game over Johnsonburg

New this semester, some of the upperclassmen at Elk County Catholic High School have been taking a closer look at the values of courage, commitment, integrity, sacrifice, patriotism, and citizenship through an elective course called Medal of Honor: Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self-Sacrifice.

Local indoor ensembles perform championship preview show

St. Marys Area and Elk County Catholic High School's indoor ensembles performed their Wildwood Preview Show on Monday evening for family, friends and community members.
A packed crowd gathered inside the SMAHS gymnasium which plays host to the annual show held prior to the teams' departure later this week to participate in the 2015 Tournament Indoor Association (TIA) Atlantic Coast Championships, also referred to as All-Chapter Championships, taking place April 30-May 3 in Wildwood, N.J.

Funding received for Squab Hollow Road repairs

RIDGWAY – At Monday's Elk County Conservation District board of directors meeting, the directors approved funding for two projects within its dirt and gravel program and its low volume road program.
The directors' decision came after the Elk County Conservation District's quality assurance board met to review all of the applications that the district had received for funding of a dirt, gravel or low volume road project.

Dedication ceremony for Rotary clock

St. Marys Rotarians and citizens gathered early Saturday afternoon along the Boulevard for a clock dedication ceremony in conjunction with the club's 65th anniversary.
"About two years ago we decided that with our 65th year coming up, we wanted to do something to make it a special event," said Rotarian Bob Roberts, also the chairman of the club's clock committee. "Rotarian Dave Greene suggested the idea of putting up a clock, and from there the research was done and there was a lot of planning, a lot of investigating."

Unique college-prep program focuses on those in autism spectrum

For Mitchell Rakieski, an 11th grade student at St. Marys Area High School, college preparation is beginning earlier than most.
This summer, Rakieski will participate in the Mercyhurst University's Foundations program, recognized as the nation’s top college-readiness program for students on the autism spectrum.
Rakieski was one of 24 students selected out of many applicants from all across the U.S.

Seismic testing to continue throughout three-county area

In continuing with their natural gas development process, Seneca Resources Corporation plans to begin 3-D seismic testing across a 97-square mile area spanning Elk, Jefferson and Forest counties.
This is a continuation of a project Seneca conducted last year that focused on the greater St. Marys area.
The area encompasses Elk County's Millstone and Spring Creek townships as well as Jefferson County's Barnett, Eldred, Heath, Polk and Warsaw townships and Forest County's Barnett and Jenks townships.
