Lady Crusaders hand Lady Dutch 5-1 loss

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders softball team remained undefeated on the season with a 5-1 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Friday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
Elk Catholic is now 5-0 on the season while the Lady Dutch slipped to 4-2.

Crusaders deal Dutch 17-4 five-inning setback

The St. Marys Area and Elk County Catholic baseball teams faced off for the first time this season on Friday afternoon with the Crusaders dealing the Dutchmen a 17-4 defeat in five innings during a cool and windy game played at Berwind Park.

Elk County has 4 PA Wilds award winners

KERSEY – On Thursday evening, multiple Elk County businesses, an event and a nature landmark were recognized during the Pennsylvania Wilds Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet.
They are among a small group of business owners, citizens and organizations from across the 12.5 county Pennsylvania Wilds region who were acknowledged for their contributions in sustainable tourism development.

VA medical asset stipulation changed

RIDGWAY – An important change in VA health care may open the door for more veterans to apply for enrollment.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) currently collects income and net worth (asset) information from veterans who apply for enrollment in VA health care to determine eligibility and/or copay responsibility.
To align VA's health care program with other federal health care programs' financial assessment requirements, earlier this year the VA discontinued the collection of veterans' net worth information for purposes of financial assessment for health benefits.

ECCHS students chosen to take part in lab pilot test

Students in the AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, and Human Anatomy and Physiology classes at Elk County Catholic High School recently had the opportunity to take part in the pilot test of a lab created by Science Take-Out of Pittsford, N.Y. ECC was one of 32 schools selected to participate in the pilot test out of around 700 applicants.
According to Laura Anderson, Science Department Chairperson and the instructor for all three courses, the school found out they were selected in early December and received the material required for the lab at the end of February.

Bradford Owls edge Dutch tennis 5-4

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team lost another close match, this time to the Bradford Owls by a 5-4 score Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.

Crusader tennis blanks DCC 9-0

The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team improved to 7-2 on the season with a 9-0 victory over the DuBois Central Cardinals in a match played Wednesday afternoon at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.

Dowd charged in January 'Suzy's' arson

A Ridgway man is charged with arson in the January fire at 590 South St. Marys St., formerly Suzy's Furniture Store.
A joint investigation by the St. Marys Police, the State Police Fire Marshal and the Crystal Fire Department concluded with the arrest of Colin M. Dowd, 36.

SMAHS seniors to represent DECA Club at international event

St. Marys Area High School senior Deianna Young earned a trip to the DECA international competition after bringing home a top three finish at the organization's 2015 State Career Development Conference recently held in Hershey.
Young received third-place honors in the DECA Quick Serve Restaurant Management portion of the state competition held at the Hershey Lodge from Feb. 24-26.
On Friday, Young will depart for the DECA International Career Development Conference taking place in Orlando, Fla. until April 28.
