The Elk County Catholic Crusaders were dealt a tough 38-6 loss by the Curwensville Golden Tide during a cold, wet and muddy contest at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys on Friday evening. The Crusaders' lone touchdown came in the middle of the third quarter after the Golden Tide had already built a 30-point lead.

Thomas A. Herbstritt, 81, of 106 Catalina Road, St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at his home following an illness of the past seven months.
He was born March 12, 1930 in St. Marys, son of the late Floyd C. and Catherine Cheatle Herbstritt. On Oct. 25, 1952, in Byrnedale, he married Mary J. Snelick, who survives.
Charles J. "Pooch" Cunningham, 68, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
Cunningham was born Dec. 2, 1942 in St. Marys, son of the late Charles and Angela Simbeck Cunningham.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1960. He was retired employee of the Keystone Carbon Company, retiring in 2004 after 40 years of service.
Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the April 5-6, 1999 homicide of Irene Challingsworth, a 56-year-old St. Marys beautician.

Area veterans and citizens stood at the Bucktail Plaza in St. Marys on a cold and rainy Thursday afternoon to pay their respects to United States Air Force Major Thomas Clark, an Emporium native shot down by enemy fire over Laos in February 1969, as he was escorted home to Emporium for a public visitation, funeral services and interment.
LAKE CITY - The Elk County Humane Society reports investigating an act of animal cruelty that occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Lake City, Spring Creek Township, Elk County, when a male brindle-colored pit bull dog was discovered shot in the shoulder at close range with a shotgun.
The dog was found on private property in the Lake City area with a large wound in his right shoulder.
At Thursday's meeting, Jay Township Supervisors discussed changes and if at all possible, costs that could be cut or altogether eliminated in attempting to balance the township's budget.
Supervisor Jeremy Rippey suggested that the board consider taking $50,000, in the form of a CD, previously earmarked for a paving project and move the funds to the township's general fund to compensate for currently low tax revenue.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen boys' soccer squad ended their regular season by slipping and sliding their way to a muddy 2-1 victory over the Port Allegheny Gators in a cold and rainy match on Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
All of the scoring for both teams took place in the first half.
The Johnsonburg Ramettes volleyball team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch squad a 3-0 setback Thursday on Senior Night for St. Marys Area.
The Lady Dutch seniors, along with their parents, were recognized in pre-match ceremonies.
The Ramettes won the first set by a 25-19 margin. They took the second set 25-22 and won the third set 25-23 to win the match 3-0.
“I can’t be disappointed with the loss,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt. “Overall we did well. The six seniors all did well tonight.”

A 12-member Butler County jury concluded their deliberations Thursday morning at approximately 10:20 a.m. when Elk County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Richard Masson announced the a verdict had been reached inside the Elk County Courthouse.
