KERSEY â€“ A record crowd was on hand during the annual Pennsylvania Wilds Spring Briefing event held at the Red Fern in Kersey, during which time 13 local organizations and individuals were honored for their outstanding work in conservation and sustainable tourism development.
The 9th Annual Trout Derby and Geocaching "Fish" Run will be held Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Lucky Leo will be worth $5,000 and Gramps will be valued at $2,500; Leny and Lucy will be worth $1,000 apiece. Others include a fish worth $305 in memory of Joe Weinzierl and the Big Daddy from Fox's Pizza in Ridgway worth $750.
Irene A. O'Rourke, 86, of 804 Rasselas Road, Wilcox, died on the morning of January 20, 2013, at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 6, 1926 in Wilcox, daughter of the late Edward and Alice Retzer Powell.
On June 14, 1945 in St. Ann's Church in Wilcox she married Calvin S. O'Rourke, and he survives.
She resided in Wilcox all her life and graduated from Wilcox High School in 1944. She was a member of St. Ann's Church, Wilcox. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Along with her husband, they are the owners of the "Ponderosa" in Wilcox.
ST. MARYS â€“ A Kersey couple, Breanna Marie Uhl, 19, and Roger Matthew Dugan III, 21 charged with taking their own 11-month-old child from a relative's custody waived hearings in District Court Tuesday on charges stemming from the April 22 incident in which the two allegedly burglarized the legal guardian's home and snatched the child before leading cops on a chase that ended in downtown St. Marys.
On Tuesday afternoon students witnessed the tragic consequences of drunk driving during a mock crash held at Elk County Catholic High School. The staged scene showed two vehicles involved in a head-on collision, each carrying four occupants.
RIDGWAY â€“ Three St. Marys residents, David Keith Aul, 19, Rebecca Elaine Aul, 23, Thomas Peter Yanak, 20, and Ben Samick, 19, charged with killing four whitetail deer outside of hunting season and processing the animals in a St. Marys garage, pled guilty in Elk County Court Monday to various counts of unlawful killing of big game.
RIDGWAY â€“ A Johnsonburg man, Timothy Richard Jones, 20, charged with sexually assaulting a female neighbor on two separate occasions, within days of each other, accepted a plea bargain in Elk County Court that saw felony charges of rape, sexual assault, burglary, and aggravated indecent assault dropped in exchange for his pleading guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor indecent assault.
ECC head tennis coach Nick Caggiano recently expressed the hope that, by the time his current sophomore players Drew Meyer and Alan Brennen were seniors, they might find themselves facing off for the District 9 Class AA singles title. On Monday Meyer and Brennen exceeded his expectations and achieved that goal as sophomores, working their way through the Class AA bracket to set up an all ECC final where Meyer emerged victorious 6-0, 6-1.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team split a doubleheader Monday afternoon with the Punxsutawney Chucks at Berwind Park. The Chucks were the home team in the first game which they won by a 16-1 score in four innings. The Dutch took the nightcap by a 5-4 score. St. Marys was the home team in that game.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders had the winning run on base in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to put together the hits to get that runner home and ended up coming up short 5-3 to Curwensville in a game played at Benzinger Park.
