St. Marys still has ties to New York World's Fair

The Shawmut shop building, an important site for the Pittsburg, Shawmut, and Northern Railroad, burned down in March 1941 and was replaced with a structure that also had a unique history, according to local historian Ray Beimel.
Beimel discussed the history of the Pittsburgh, Shawmut, and Northern Railroad during a recent presentation at the St. Marys Senior Center, noting that when the shop burned down in 1941, "every amateur photographer in town seems to have taken a picture of it."

Music festival benefits fire department

The Third Annual G-Stock Music Festival will benefit the Ridgway Fire Department.
The two-day event will be held Friday, Aug. 3 and Saturday, Aug. 4 at 142 Old Red Mill Dam Rd. [Gardner's Grove], Montmorenci, Ridgway.
Gates will open at 5 p.m. and music will held from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.
This year's lineup features TopGunHighFive, Boogie with Stu and Crash Factory on Friday and King Thaddeus, Six Pack and Bounty Hunter on Saturday.

Robert G. Vogt III

Robert G. Vogt III, 37, of 132 Robin Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly at his residence on Friday, July 27, 2012.
He was born August 23, 1974 in Ridgway, a son of Robert G. Jr. and Vicki L. Steudler Vogt, of St. Marys.
Bobby attended St. Marys Area High School. He was employed at Rohr Industry and enjoyed playing Texas hold 'em. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family, especially his daughter and nieces and newphews.

Robert G. Dumich

Robert G. Dumich, 71, of Teaberry Street, Weedville died unexpectedly Sunday, July 28, 2012 at the Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1941 in St. Marys, son of the late Louis and Katherine Feldbauer Dumich.
He married Regina (Muff) in March 1978. She survives.
Mr. Dumich was born and raised in St. Marys and moved to Bennetts Valley in 1978.
He was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School.

Robert N. Connelly

Robert N. Connelly, 85, of 817 Birch Rd., St. Marys, died on Friday, July 27, 2012 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born November 25, 1926 in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Herbert and Leila Barton Connelly.
On June 14, 1952 in Jamestown, N.Y., he married Delores Hearburg Connelly, who survives.

Leo J. “Bo” Winters

July 27, 2012

Leo J. “Bo” Winters, 83, of Water Street, Johnsonburg, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys after a lengthy illness.
Born on Oct. 3, 1928 in Johnsonburg, he was the son of the late Walter and Grace (Meise) Winters. On July 12, 1958, he married Lillian M. (Fitch) Winters. She predeceased him on Dec. 10, 2009.

Power still out in some areas

ST. MARYS - Thursday afternoon's big storm cut across Elk and nearby counties, leaving downed trees, power lines, and debris in its wake. As of press time Friday, some county residents were still without power. Many Verizon Wireless customers lost service from the time the storm hit, and service was restored around 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Kindergarteners complete readiness program

In preparation of the entrance into elementary school, 106 students from throughout the St. Marys Area School District recently participated in Dickinson Center, Inc.'s (DCI) Kindergarten Readiness Program.
The free six-week program was open to any incoming kindergartener at South St. Marys Street, Fox Township or Bennetts Valley elementary schools. Dickinson staff conducted four different sessions, each being held two days a week for 2.5 hours each. The program took place at SSMSE.

Shawmut workers earned good reputation

The workers in the St. Marys shops of the Pittsburg, Shawmut, and Northern Railroad, over time, earned quite a reputation for the quality of their work, according to local historian Ray Beimel.
During a recent presentation at the St. Marys Senior Center, Beimel explained that the railroad's shops were at one time located where the Depot Street parking garage currently stands.
Beimel remarked that while the appearance of the buildings was not impressive, the quality of the work conducted there was top-notch.

Stoltz giving away $26,000 to area charities

ST. MARYS - Stoltz Family Dealerships is again conducting a voter-driven giveaway to area charities this year, and the company is also increasing the amount of money to be donated.
In celebration of the automobile sales and service company's 26 years of doing business with the region’s communities, Stoltz plans to give away $26,000. Last year, it gave $25,000 in celebration of 25 years of service.
Co-owner Steve Stoltz said last year's contest proved to be "very popular."
