SMAHS honors 2012 graduates

Members of the St. Marys Area High School Class of 2012 capped off their high school career on Friday evening during the school's 116th annual commencement program.
Following their procession into the Carpin Auditorium, with musical accompaniment provided by the SMAHS Concert Band under the direction of Chris Gankosky, 180 graduates took their place on stage in front of a large audience of family, faculty and friends.
The band then performed the national anthem, followed by the SMAHS alma mater sung by the school chorus.

Prime time for Lyme disease in Pa.

As spring moves into summer, Pennsylvania residents should take extra precautions to protect themselves from Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that can appear in humans, some mice, birds, deer and other animals from the bite of a deer tick.

Doris A. "Sorgie" Celin, 79, of 140 East Oilwell St., St. Marys, died on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a brief illness.
She was born March 3, 1933 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Sebastian and Margaret Deth Sorg.
On October 23, 1953 in St. Mary's Church, she married Anthony M. Celin, who survives.

Lady Crusader softball wins District 9-A crown

KERSEY - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team captured the District 9 Class A championship by defeating the Brockway Lady Rovers by a 4-0 score Thursday afternoon at the Fox Township Community Park in Kersey.
The Lady Crusaders used a two-run home run by Lyndsey Trumbull in the second inning and a two-run double by Michelle Imbrogno in the sixth inning to account for their four runs.

Coudersport shuts out Crusaders 7-0 for D9-A title

After pulling off a big win Wednesday to knock off an undefeated Johnsonburg squad and advance to the D9 Class A baseball final, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders came out flat on Thursday evening at Berwind Park. The ECC squad got behind early, struggled with their offense, and were shut out 7-0 by a very good Coudersport team, which entered the tournament as the sixth seed.

Adult Day Services can ease strain for loved one, caregiver

ST. MARYS – Taking care of an adult loved one with progressive physical or cognitive disabilities can be frustrating for both the adult and the caregiver at times. A program called Adult Day Services can give caregivers respite and provide a quality atmosphere for older adults who can no longer be left alone for long periods of time-- and now area residents may take advantage of a trial run.

Student wins PennDOT District 2 distracted driving PSA contest

ST. MARYS - Matt Wickett, a junior at St. Marys Area High School, was announced as this year's winner of the state Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest for District 2.
District 2 encompasses nine counties, including Elk, and has a land mass the size of the state of New Jersey. PennDOT representatives were on hand at SMAHS Tuesday to present Wickett with a certificate marking his achievement.

Just in time for summer grilling, local author John Schlimm's latest cookbook, "Grilling Vegan Style," offers 125 backyard barbecue recipes ranging from sides, salads and suppers to desserts, tailgating classics and happy hour beverages.
Schlimm's newest title, rated one of 2012's "must-buy" vegan cookbooks by VegNews and one of the top 10 cookbooks for spring 2012 by Publishers Weekly, features 240 pages of recipes, photos, grilling techniques and tools of the trade, as well as vegan staples, preparation tips and safety reminders.

Mary E. Pavlock, 71, of 215 Taft Rd., St. Marys, died at her home Wednesday evening, May 30, 2012.
She was born April 9, 1941 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Alcuin E. (Ed) and Amanda M. Grotzinger Ehrensberger.
On June 10, 1967, in the St. Mary’s Church, she married Richard S. Pavlock, who survives.

Elk County Catholic (16-5) dealt previously undefeated Johnsonburg (20-1) a stunning 5-2 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park, ousting the No. 1 seed from the District 9 Class A baseball playoffs in the process. Throughout the season, one run was often times the difference in a game for the Rams; on Wednesday, just one loss spoiled their season and kept them out of both the district title game and the state playoffs.
