Elk Catholic cross country teams host Brookville, Brockway squads

The Elk County Catholic cross country teams played host to the Brookville and Brockway squads Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The Crusaders defeated Brookville 19-38 and Brockway 22-34. Brookville defeated Brockway 26-30.
There was no scoring in the girls’ meet, as Elk Catholic was the only school with a full team.
In the boys’ race, the Crusaders took the first two spots in Ryan Detsch in 18:04 and Drew Bille in 18:21. Brockway’s Dakota Lawson was third in 18:48. Elk’s Lucas Knight placed fourth in 19:24, with Brookville’s Shane Hummel rounding out the top five in 19:51.

Lady Dutch tennis edges Johnsonburg 5-4

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team edged the Johnsonburg Ramettes 5-4 in a match played at Johnsonburg.
At first singles, SMA’s Amy Orr defeated Riley Fannin 6-1, 6-1.
At second singles, Aubrey Wiesner of St. Marys defeated Cheyenne Johnson 6-0, 6-1.
SMA’s Chelsea Agosti won her match 6-0, 6-1 over Josie Del Rio at third singles.
At fourth singles, Danielle McCoy of the Lady Dutch lost her match in a three-set tiebreaker 2-6, 9-7, 3-10 against Paige Martonik.
At fifth singles, Andrea Allegretto of Johnsonburg defeated Madison Squires 6-1, 6-2.

Crusader soccer team edged by Brookville 2-1

FOX TWP. – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders finally got on the board on Tuesday evening against Brookville, but it was not enough to get them back in the win column as they were edged 2-1 by the Raiders to extend their losing streak to five games.
"Brookville played a good game. It's unfortunate that we didn't get the result we were looking for. I'm sure we'll learn from the game and take away what we need to," said ECC coach Adam Bailey.

Brookville topples Lady Crusaders in soccer

ST. MARYS - The Brookville Lady Raiders girls' varsity soccer team scored a 4-0 victory Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders.
Junior Julie Shields scored a pair of goals for the winners. Shields scored with 3:06 remaining until halftime and then again just 10:29 from the end of the contest.
Sophomore Brenna Dworek tallied first for Brookville with 21:04 showing on the clock in the first half. Freshman Kara Wonderling upped the Lady Raiders lead to 3-0 with 15:11 to play in the game.

Former firefighter charged with arson

This camper fire, deemed arson by investigators, took place at approximately 11:36 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2012 at the 333 North St. Marys St. residence of Michael A. Scolari, a former member of the Crystal Fire Department. Scolari has been charged with arson and related offenses, insurance fraud, criminal mischief, and recklessly endangering another person in connection with the fire and has since resigned from the fire department.

ATF, PSP serve federal search warrant at Johnsonburg residence

RIDGWAY - The Ridgway-based Pennsylvania State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) executed a federal warrant on Wednesday morning, Sept. 26 at an East Avenue in Johnsonburg.Police said the joint law enforcement operation occurred as a result of information discovered during the arson investigations surrounding Francis Anthony Milliard.
The investigation continues.

Community Recycling Center kicks off PET thermoform recycling program

ST. MARYS - The Elk County Community Recycling Center, located in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys, officially kicked off their polyethylene terephthalate (PET) thermoform plastic recycling program on Wednesday, holding an open house to educate residents about PET thermoforms as well as other materials that are able to be recycled through the facility.
According to Community Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner, PET thermoform plastic is something that "just about everybody runs into."

Small petroleum spill contained in Ridgway

RIDGWAY - A small amount of petroleum from a known vehicle created a thin sheen over a portion of the roads in downtown Ridgway late Wednesday afternoon before being contained.
All firefighting units from Ridgway responded to the call at 4:11 p.m., and shortly thereafter the Elk County hazardous materials [hazmat] team responded at 4:30 p.m.

Some agriculture programs on hold with no Farm Bill

For the second time in 39 years, a federal Farm Bill governing the nation's farm and food aid policy is set to expire at the end of September.
According to Eric Bridges, executive director of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC], Congress has decided to postpone negotiations over how to reauthorize those programs until after the November elections.

Awareness efforts during ‘Wake up to Medicine Abuse Week’

ST. MARYS – Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc. is working to bring more attention to the problem of prescription drug abuse during “Wake Up to Medicine Abuse Week,” running from Sept. 23 to Sept. 29.
Jennifer Young, prevention supervisor with Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc., in Elk County, said the goal of this initiative is to increase awareness of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse and misuse, which has risen dramatically in the last few years.
