The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team took third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament by defeating the Ridgway Elkers by a 10-0 score in six innings Saturday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch used the one-hit pitching of Nate Geist to record the victory over Ridgway. Geist went the distance for the Dutch, giving up only one hit--a single in the top of the sixth-- walking four, and striking out six.
D.J. Skraba started on the mound for Ridgway, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up 11 hits, walking two and striking out three. Zack McKnight faced two batters,giving up two hits.
The first of two medicine collections scheduled to be held this year by the Elk County Recycling Office took place Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Education Center at Elk Regional Medical Center in St. Marys. Over 60 individuals had dropped off medicine by 11 a.m., a figure that Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner was pleased with. She said she was also happy with the turnout, particularly since the sun was shining in Elk County on Saturday morning after a few weeks of rainy weather.
The Concert Choir of Elk County is revisiting the 1960s, the theme of their annual concert being held Thursday and Friday, May 12 and 13, and beginning at 6 p.m. at The Royal Inn in Ridgway.

Clad in jeans and tie-dyed T-shirts, concert crooners will transport the audience back to the groovy 60s during the show entitled "What a Wonderful World - Music of the 60s".

The St. Marys Walmart held its grand re-opening celebration Friday following a store redesign. A ribbon-cutting was held, and store associates presented $4,500 in grants from the Walmart Foundation to six local organizations: $250 for the Elk County Lions Club; $1,000 for the Fox Township Recreation Board; $1,000 to Keystone Elk Country Alliance; $1,000 to Mt. Zion Historical Society; $1,000 for Project Gifts for Elk County; and $250 to the Ridgway Area High School Yearbook Club.
Edna Kronenwetter, 87, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home for the past eight years and a former resident of Elk Towers, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Bally, Pa., daughter of the late Harvey H. and Mary K. Strouse Gehman.
She attended Bally Schools and had resided in St. Marys since 1991. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking for family and friends.

St. Marys used a dominating pitching performance and powerful hitting in a 7-0 win over Elk County Catholic in the championship game of the Elk County Softball Tournament Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
"The girls came to play," St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge said. "The girls wanted it, they went out and gave 100 percent. We tell them to leave it on the field and they did."
Rachel Ginther had 13 strikeouts and two walks in a 1-hit shutout. She had a no-hit bid going for 5 and 2/3 innings until a double from ECC's Anna Hawkins ended that attempt.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team used the one-hit pitching of Luke Daghir to advance to the finals of the Elk County Baseball Tournament with an 8-1 win over the Ridgway Elkers Friday at Berwind Park.
Elk Catholic takes on Johnsonburg today at noon for the tournament title.
Daghir gave up a single, walked one and struck out seven for Elk Catholic.
Josh Mitchell started on the mound for Ridgway, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up eight hits, walking five and striking out eight. Kevin Kilhoffer worked 1/3 of an inning of relief.
The Johnsonburg Rams used 12 hits on their way to a 10-3 victory over the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen in the opening game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament played at Berwind Park.
The Rams will meet the Elk County Catholic Crusaders today at noon in the championship game. Elk Catholic beat Ridgway 8-1 in the second game Friday. St. Marys and Ridgway were to meet at 10 a.m. this morning in the consolation game.
The Rams used strong hitting and aggressive base running to record the victory. Their pitchers, while not overpowering, were able to record the outs.
During his sentencing hearing held Friday morning, Edward R. Kralik, 68, of St. Marys, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the June 2010 homicide of Clayton Lecker of St. Marys.
Elk County President Judge Richard Masson presided over the hearing, which took place in the main courtroom of the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway, where many of Lecker's family members and friends were in attendance.
Pure Thirst, an organization founded by DuBois Central Catholic senior Matt Burnett and comprised of students from a number of area schools, successfully completed its goal earlier this year of raising $28,500 for the construction of a water filtration system in El Jaral, Honduras. Now the students are working to raise enough money to allow several of them to embark on a week-long mission trip to El Jaral on June 18 to dedicate the system and participate in service work throughout that community.
According to Matt Burnett, the water filtration system itself will cost roughly $22,500.
