The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team opened their season Tuesday, but only got 2 1/2 innings in before the game with the Punxsutawney Chucks was suspended with St. Marys on top, 6-3.
The game will be picked up when the Dutch travel to Punxsutawney on May 2.
“I was very pleased with the way we played offensively today. We executed well today,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato.
“Our pitching and defense has some work to do. Punxsy had the bases loaded in two innings, but our pitchers (Bob Vollmer and Kevin Hoy) battled back and they left the bases loaded.”

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team opened their season on Monday by hosting the Brockway Rovers at Berwind Park. The Rovers were able to take advantage of seven Elk Catholic errors on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Crusaders.
“After two weeks inside you have to be ready to play and we weren’t,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
“They took advantage of our mistakes and that’s what good teams do. Their pitcher kept us off balance. Thank goodness it’s a long season,” said Father Eric.
ST. MARYS – Elk County residents placed several calls to emergency services personnel and law enforcement agencies Sunday night regarding what they described as a loud "boom." Although the source of the noise was initially attributed to seismic testing for Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling, no cause or explanation has formally been discovered.
RIDGWAY – Stephanie Ann Kilhoffer, 51, of Brockport, pleaded guilty to the charge of theft by unlawful taking or disposition, a third-degree felony offense, on Monday afternoon. Kilhoffer appeared before the Honorable Judge Richard Masson with her attorney, Thomas G. Coppolo, at 1 p.m.
Following discussion of proposing a .58 mill tax increase for next year, St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Ann Kearney will present a balanced budget next month which will include the proposed tax increase.
The SMASD Board of Directors gave their approval for the increase during their regular monthly meeting held Monday evening.
The 2011-2012 budget projects a deficit of $136,335 without a tax increase.
Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of School Directors voted unanimously to expel 13 students during their regular meeting held Monday evening.
Following the start of the meeting, a brief executive session was held to discuss student confidentiality matters. Three of the students were expelled permanently.
When questioned as to the nature of the large number of student expulsions, SMASD Superintendent Ann Kearney said it was due to a violation of school policy.
Rickey Anthony Antonuccio, 55, of Beach Grove Road, Ridgway, died on Monday, April 4, 2011, at the Hershey Medical Center.
He was born October 23, 1955, in Ridgway, the son of Nicholas P. Antonuccio, who survives, and the late Edna L. Dilley Antonuccio.
He resided in Ridgway for most of his life. He attended Ridgway Area High School. He enjoyed billards, construction, 4-wheeling, cards, storytelling, being around kids, repairing and painting cars. He was an automotive mechanic for 40 years.
Charles J. Marconi, 79, of 120 Hemlock Rd., St. Marys, died Monday morning, April 11, 2011, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 24, 1932, in St. Marys, son of the late Zolferino and Mary Nart Marconi.
On Nov. 5, 1955, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Norma Salter, who survives.

The St. Marys Area Dutch tennis team opened their season on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over the Altoona Lions Saturday at Altoona.
“It was nice to finally be able to get out and play our first match of the season. The boys were waiting for this day to finally arrive,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky.
At first singles, SMA’s Brandon Romain lost his match 6-2, 6-0 to James Doeing.
At second singles, Keith Meyer of the Dutch defeated Chris Reighard 6-3, 6-3.
Dylan Wiesner of the Dutch won his match in three sets over Tyler Hollingsworth, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team evened their record at 1-1 on the young season with a 6-1 victory over the State College squad in a game played at State College Saturday.
“State College is a good hitting team and puts the ball in play, but our defense played well, only committing one error. Our outfield made some nice catches early in the game to keep State College off the board,” said Lady Dutch coach Manny Gerarge.
