HAZEL HURST â€“ The Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors still hasn't made a decision on a Shell request for a waiver in the Stormwater Management Ordinance (SMO).
Shell several months ago asked the supervisors for the waiver for a pipeline project linked with a Marcellus Shale natural gas well off Detrick Road, which intersects with Route 6 at the Family Drive-In in Wetmore Township.
The pipeline project site is in the vicinity of Forest Road 186 in the Allegheny National Forest.
JoAnn M. Ross, 80, of 256 Monterey Ave., Ridgway, died on Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2012 at her residence.
She was born Aug. 27, 1931 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Elmer and Anna Anderson.
On July 25, 1953, she married Norman H. Ross, who preceded her in death on May 10, 2006.
She was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a graduate of the Ridgway High School and a graduate of the Augustana Lutheran Pediatric Nursing School in Chicago.
Lock Haven University Clearfield Campus is offering an extended education class to teach those looking to work in Pennsylvania's growing gas industry.
"The Marcellus Shale Industry Overview will be a 30-hour class about the geology and industry of Marcellus Shale and gas rich shale units, plus the business aspects of gas drilling. This course is designed for anyone seeking to learn more about the industry as a citizen, student, or professional," as stated in an LHU Clearfield press release
St. Marys City Manager Dave Greene provided his manager's report during Monday evening's City Council meeting, stating that on Jan. 11 he met with developer Bob Yoder and North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (NCPRPDC) representatives Bob Imhof and Dave Puncheon to discuss the city's downtown hotel project.
Greene reported that a grant for $3 million has been signed and approved by officials in Harrisburg and the money is available to be released as soon as the other $5.5 million in funding becomes available.
In a effort to fill the vacant City Council seat, Council unanimously approved the appointment of Bob Ordiway as the vacancy board chairperson during their Monday evening meeting.
If Council is unable to make a decision within 30 days on whom to appoint to the seat, the decision then rests with the vacancy board, compiled of seven individuals consisting of the current six council members and Ordiway.
City Manager Dave Greene stated council will likely not make a decision within the 30 days; then the decision must be made by the vacancy board.
BROOKVILLE â€” The first day of the Stephen Patrick Rebert murder trial began with opening arguments from the attorneys on both sides which were radically different from each other.Â
Rebert, formerly of Emporium, faces double homicide charges in the shooting deaths of Victoria Lynn Shugar and her husband, James Shugar â€” also known as Wayne Shugar â€” both 61, who were found dead April 12, 2010, in their Coal Tipple Road home, Brockway.
ST. MARYS â€“ Catholic Charities recently received a $6,000 from Women Who Care to support their Real Alternatives Program.
Nanci Mattison, who serves as Director of Catholic Charities, explained that the program is a way to help deter expecting mothers in a crisis situation from abortion.
â€śIn the program we provide counseling and help them look for other options,â€ť Mattison said. â€śWe are a pro-life agency and seek to show them alternatives to abortion, help assist them and realize they can do it as a parent.â€ť
JoAnn M. Ross of 256 Monterey Ave., Ridgway, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2012 at her residence following a brief illness.
Funeral and committal services for JoAnn M. Ross will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Eric Hart, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Oakmont Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home, 136 Center St., Ridgway.

Carmen L. Martino, 66, of 34 West Cardott St., Ridgway, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at his residence.
He was born August 24, 1945, in Ridgway, the son of Ruben and Virginia Vecchiarella Martino.
On September 14, 2007, he married Jennifer Wolff, who survives.
Mr. Martino had resided all of his life in Ridgway. He was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and he was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Ridgway Rifle Club. He was a retired fireman with the Ridgway Volunteer Fire Dept.
Patricia A. Green, 55, of 691 Pontzer Ave., St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born March 15, 1957 in DuBois, a daughter of the late Gustie Anderson and Agnes Thielges Anderson Grier.
On July 8, 2002 in Johnsonburg, she married Clifford Green, who survives.
