f you are spring cleaning and wondering what to do with the outdated hardback encyclopedia set taking up an entire shelf on your bookcase, or just simply have hardback books you want to get rid of, the Community Recycling Center in St. Marys is now offering the option to recycle them.

ny beer aficionado knows that all beer doesn't taste the same. A lager, a pilsner, an ale-- people want to know what's inside the bottle or glass before they try it. That's a major reason why Straub Brewery is changing its packaging, labels, and marketing strategy and announced the changes late last month.
Straub Brewery, Inc. President and CEO William C. Brock provided some history about the brewery business and how changes in the industry over the years have led to Straub's rebranding effort.

Dutch tennis team advances to 9-AA team finals

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team advanced to the District 9-AA team championship match by defeating the Brockway Rovers 4-1 Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
The second-seeded Dutchmen will now take on the top-seeded Elk County Catholic Crusaders next Wednesday at a site and time to be announced.
At first singles, Michael Fox of the Dutch defeated Joey Britton 6-0, 6-1.
At second singles, Dutchman Evan Lepovetsky defeated Fabio Fortunato 6-4, 6-1.
At third singles, Brockway’s Alec Bouch defeated D.J. Challingsworth 6-4, 6-1.

Crusader tennis defeats Johnsonburg Rams 8-1

The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis squad picked up an 8-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Rams on Wednesday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks in St. Marys
"[It was] a good win for us today," said ECC coach Nick Caggiano. "We were taking nice shots and working on improving on some areas."
At first singles, Crusader Ben Wortman defeated Mason Martonik 6-1, 6-0. At second singles, Drew Meyer fell to Johnsonburg's J.P. Allegretto 2-6, 3-6. At third singles, Shane Mancuso picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win for ECC over Shane Bickford.

Fox supervisors approve emergency management plan

Fox Township adopted an emergency management plan during the regular township supervisors' meeting Wednesday evening.
Fox Twp. Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Skrzypek explained the basic plan falls under the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and does not lock the township into one manner of action.
"The NIMS system allows for leeway for the township to take action as needed or to fit their plan into a larger plan, such as a county or state plan," Skrzypek said.

Area clergy hosting National Day of Prayer service

Citizens are invited to attend the National Day of Prayer service taking place tonight at 6 p.m. on the Diamond in downtown St. Marys.
This year’s theme, “One Nation Under God”, is based on Psalm 33:12 which reminds us that “blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
The St. Marys Ministerial Association is sponsoring the event which will begin with music and an invocation followed by the presentation of the American flag by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail,the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem by Vivian Lutton.

Look Good Feel Better continues to offer support

ST. MARYS – Local St. Marys salon Shear Envy and its owner and stylist Cari Wortman teach the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program to help women battling cancer improve their appearance and self-image.
“The program helps women understand the changes in their hair and skin that may occur during treatment,” Wortman said. “This helps the patients overcome the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.”
Wortman began offering the program six years ago because she loves reaching out and helping others.

More work on veterans' monuments

After doing extensive work at the Protestant Cemetery over the past few weeks, Don "Flip" Bobenrieth of St. Marys Monuments and Bill Schatz of Schatz's Lawn and Wall Installation and their crews headed over the the St. Mary's Catholic cemetery to install the second of the two monuments that will honor area veterans.
