St. Marys Area gymnasts defeat Altoona squad

The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad defeated the Altoona Lions by a 126.0250 to 121.0 score Wednesday in a meet held at the St. Marys Area Middle School.
“The team did extremely well. I was very pleased with everyone’s performances on all of the events,” said St. Marys coach Irene McCandless.
“The team is definitely moving in the right direction. I am hoping we can keep the momentum up and continue to be a competitive team,” she added.

Lady Crusaders down Curwensville 53-34

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team used a big third quarter to defeat the Curwensville Lady Tide by a 53-34 score Wednesday night in a game played at the ECCHS gym.
The first 16 minutes of play saw the Lady Crusaders take a 21-14 lead at the half. In the third period of play, Elk Catholic outscored the Lady Tide by a 20-6 margin to open a 41-20 lead with eight minutes remaining. Curwensville outscored the Lady Crusaders by a 14-12 score in the fourth quarter, making the final score 53-34 in favor of the Lady Crusaders.

Geci found guilty of violations

JOHNSONBURG – Shawn Geci, a Ridgway Borough police officer and resident, was found guilty yesterday afternoon in District Court 59-3-02 on charges pertaining to unlawful hunting practices that reportedly occurred Dec. 3, 2010.
Before Cameron County District Judge Alvin Brown, Geci was found guilty of operating a motorized ATV on lands leased by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and use of unlawful devices and methods to hunt wildlife.

Polar Sweet Express event to benefit CAPSEA

On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Franklin Center in downtown St. Marys will be transformed into a one-stop Valentine shopping experience as part of The Polar Sweet Express event.
The brand-new event that will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will feature an array of local vendors displaying their products, with proceeds benefiting the CAPSEA (Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse) shelter in Ridgway.
Together, The River 98.9 has partnered with Ridgway BiLo and Northwest Savings Bank in sponsoring the event.

Lilley appointed to new position

It was standing-room only at the Jay Township Supervisors meeting Thursday evening, as a crowd of about 40 township residents gathered to express their views and hear the supervisors' plans regarding township business, such as their recent decision to eliminate the township's roadmaster position.

Bret P. Cooney

Bret P. Cooney, 30, of 9008 Maple St., Pittsburgh, and formerly of Wilcox, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 20, 2011 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville as the result of a drilling rig accident that occurred Jan. 14 near Scranton.
He was born March 1, 1980 in St. Marys, the son of Charles P. and Jean Bauer Cooney, who survive.

Agatha D. “Gay” Bleggi

Agatha D. “Gay” Bleggi, 90, of 515 High Ave., St. Marys, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday morning, Jan. 19, 2011, at the Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 8, 1920, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Frank and Lucy Weinzierl Daniels.
On Jan. 14, 1947, in the St. Mary’s Church, she married Leo L. Bleggi, who preceded her in death on June 23, 1962.

James Vincent Marcolivio

James Vincent Marcolivio, 89, of Hermitage Hills Blvd., Hermitage, died peacefully at 4:08 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011 in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, with his family at his side.
Mr. Marcolivio was born July 6, 1921, in Ridgway, the son of the late Giuseppe and Michalina Lemongelli Marcolivio.

New business offers variety of graphic design services

Area residents in need of graphic design services now have another option with the creation of Adam Feldbauer's new business, Adam Feldbauer Design.
Born and raised in St. Marys, Feldbauer learned the fundamentals and principals of 2D and 3D design while attending Edinboro University. He also holds an associate degree in business with a specialization in design from DuBois Business College.

It's Girl Scout cookie time

Calling all Girl Scout cookie fans: It's that time of year when Girl Scouts around the country embark on their annual cookie sale. Orders are now being taken until Wednesday, Jan. 26, with delivery expected the week of February 24.
Once again, this year's offerings include Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Lemon Chalet Cremes, Trefoils, Dulce de Leches, and Thank U Berry Munches.
All eight varieties are selling for $3.50 a box, the same cost as in past years. Troops receive proceeds of 65 cents per box for senior scouts and 60 cents for junior and cadet scouts.
