The Johnsonburg Community Center (JCC) will play host to the fifth annual Bean Bake, scheduled for Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.
The all-you-can-eat buffet dinner consists of homemade baked beans, a choice of two potato salads - hot German and cold potato salad - applesauce, bread-and-butter pickles, cornbread and molasses spice cake with cream. Coffee, tea, milk, lemonade and ice water will also be served.
Organizers Christine Bressler, JCC recreational director, and Stephanie Distler, owner of Flemish House Art Gallery and studio, located inside the JCC, teamed up in sponsoring the event.
Elk watchers in the Benezette area are likely to be familiar with a large bull with a yellow radio telemetry collar bearing the number 36 that was a common sight around the community.
The elk, which was estimated to be about 18 years old by Doty McDowell, Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer for the Northcentral Region, had to be put down in January after breaking his leg on an icy roadway.
McDowell explained that a husband and wife had found the elk lying on a forested road to the north of Benezette and it appeared he was unable to get up.
Since early January, a number of tribute sites have sprung up on the internet to commemorate the life of Fred, one of Benezette's most well-known inhabitants; however, it is interesting to note that Fred was not a person, but an elk.
Marci Geise, founder of the "Fred Jr. #36 ~ A Lasting Tribute" page on Facebook, explained that she created the page the day after she learned of Fred's passing.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team held off the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen to record a 43-39 District 9 League win last night at the ECCHS gym.

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch registered a hard-fought 46-35 victory over the Bradford Area Lady Owls last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The victory clinched the District 9 League title for the Lady Dutch. St. Marys is now 8-1 in league play with one league game remaining, to be played on Saturday night when they host Elk Catholic.
Last night’s game was a close affair until the fourth quarter, when St. Marys outscored Bradford by a 17-8 margin. Eight of the Lady Dutch’s 17 points in the final period came from the free-throw line, where they were 18 of 26 for the game.

A St. Marys woman was indicted this week by a federal grand jury in Erie in Erie on charges of mail fraud and tax evasion, according to an announcement made Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney's western Pa. district office.
As briefly reported in the Thursday, Feb. 10 edition of The Daily Press, Sandra Ann Prechtel, 49, of 531 Washington St., St. Marys, was charged with three felony counts of tax evasion and six felony counts of mail fraud and for the alleged embezzlement of almost $1 million from her employer, Abbott Furnace Co., between 2002 and 2007.
Among the topics discussed at the St. Marys Area School District Board of School Directors workshop on Thursday evening were an update on the various construction projects within the district and the playing of the national anthem at select sporting events.
The telehealth program offered by Community Nurses, Inc. provides patients with certain medical issues a means of remaining in the comfort of their own homes while continuing to have their conditions monitored daily. The telehealth program was implemented in 2002 and is available to residents of Elk, McKean and Cameron counties.
Telehealth Coordinator Michele Uplinger explained that the main goal of the telehealth program is to provide a means of checking in with patients when a member of the Community Nurses staff cannot physically be in the home.

On Wednesday, the competition cheerleading squad for Elk County Catholic High School headed to Orlando to compete in the National High School Cheerleading Championship, held at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Fla. The squad earned a spot by qualifying at the Allegheny Regional, which was held at Slippery Rock University in December.

The Punxsutawney Chuck wrestling squad handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 34-30 loss Wednesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The match saw the Chucks open a 22-9 lead, only to see the Dutchmen come back to take a 24-22 lead with four matches remaining. Punxsy picked up two decisions and a pin to record the victory.
“The team didn’t get it done tonight. Punxsutawney wrestled to win,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “Punxsy had all the excuses, but they stepped up and got the job done - we didn’t.
