The Elk and Cameron Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross has recently undergone a restructuring of its chapter in an effort to reduce administrative costs, while still providing the necessary services offered by the organization.
Bob Newell of Penfield is the newly appointed executive director of the Elk and Cameron Counties Chapter. He will also maintain the same position at the DuBois Chapter and the Clearfield/Jefferson Chapter.
He has been with the Red Cross for approximately three years, with his current obligations focused on fundraising and community building.
Just over a year ago, Kane Community Hospital officially became affiliated with the Hamot Medical Center in Erie.
Within a few months, Hamot is expected to formally affiliate with the giant University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
"This is a big deal," Gary Rhodes said Thursday in commenting on the pending "definitive agreement" between Hamot and UPMC. Rhodes, the chief executive officer at Kane Community Hospital (KCH), said the "trickle-down" effect from the Hamot-UPMC affiliation would bring many benefits to the Kane hospital.
At their recent meeting, the Jay Township Supervisors faced the task of selecting their choice for the organization that will provide engineering and technical assistance to municipalities within the county as they work to establish a stormwater management ordinance to comply with Pa. Act 167. Jay Township is partnering with Jones, Highland, Horton and Spring Creek townships and Johnsonburg Borough, and each municipality was asked to choose between two different bidders, with the bidder receiving the majority of the votes approved to serve all of the municipalities.

RIDGWAY – North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] members voted yesterday to enter into negotiations with Elk County officials regarding the potential sale of the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC] for use as a new 911 Center.
Residents looking to dispose of items such as wrapping paper and Christmas cards after the holiday season have another option instead of simply throwing the material in the trash. Bekki Titchner, county recycling coordinator, explained that these items and more are accepted at the Community Recycling Center in St. Marys.
Young parishioners at Shiloh Presbyterian Church in St. Marys are preparing for their Christmas musical, “All I Want for Christmas,” taking place Sunday evening at 6 p.m. inside the church’s Christian Education Center on Washington Street.
The public is invited to attend the musical, which features Sunday school children and members of the church’s Youth Group.
“This is a great play to have a lot of kids in. I feel it has a great story and is a different way to present the Lord’s coming,” said director Sharon Wiest, wife of Shiloh Presbyterian Pastor Scott Wiest.
Elk County Catholic pulled away in the second half for a 37-23 win over Johnsonburg Wednesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
After a scoreless first two minutes of the game, Abbi Petrosky nailed two free throws to put ECC up 2-0. Taylor DaCanal added a jump shot to put the Crusaders up 4-0 with 5:13 left. Taylor Harvey of Johnsonburg added a jumper to halve the lead to 4-2 but Karly Carnovale added two points with 3:13 left. The Lady Crusaders led 6-2 after the first quarter.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 54-49 victory over the Port Allegany Gators Wednesday at Port Allegany.
St. Marys was able to take a 36-31 lead at the half. They made that five-point lead hold up as both teams scored 18 second-half points.
“We were never able to build a big cushion,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.
“Our free-throw shooting let us down but our rebounding tonight was our saving grace. It gave us a lot of second-chance opportunities that we really needed,” he added.

Kayla Hoohuli reaches 2,000 career point plateau
St. Marys Area senior Kayla Hoohuli reached the 2,000 career point plateau last night as the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch handed the Cameron County Lady Raiders a 63-41 loss.
Kayla scored the career mark with 7:58 left in the second quarter of play on a two-pointer. She needed 26 points to reach the milestone and was able to score the first 27 points of the night for the Lady Dutch.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders notched their first win of the season on Tuesday evening as they held on to defeat the Johnsonburg Area High Rams by a 50-36 score in a game played at the Aaron J. Straub gym on the Elk Cathloic campus.
The game was a lot closer than the final score indicates, as the Johnsonburg Rams were in the game up until the final five minutes, when the Crusaders put it away as they outscored the Rams 15 to 7.
