Chamber honors businesses, organization at annual dinner

The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce presented "A Night at the Races" on Saturday evening as part of their annual dinner. Attendees gathered inside the Red Fern, which was transformed into a horse racetrack in conjunction with the event's theme.

Old photographs can provide insight into a variety of areas

Editor's note: This is the tenth and final part in a series of articles based on a presentation given by area historian and photographer Ray Beimel regarding items in the society's collection related to winter throughout the community's early history.

While old photographs can showcase many common activities and sights from winters throughout the community's history, local historian Ray Beimel explained during the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township's recent banquet that not every picture is as it appears.

Music director in need of host families

RIDGWAY - Ridgway Area High School Music Director Theresa Morley-Palmer is looking for residents to open up their hearts and their homes and volunteer to house two more students during the regional choir competition.
As a host family, volunteers would provide a place for students to sleep on March 7, 8 and 9, a shower, a breakfast and a ride to and from school at 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
According to Palmer, 160 students from 53 schools will be coming to Ridgway Area High School to audition for a chance to compete in the State Music Festival in Lancaster in April.

Mary Martha Halloran

Mary Martha Halloran, 94, a resident of the St. Marys Home in Erie and formerly of 131 Oilwell St., St. Marys, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 26, 2012, at the St. Marys Home East in Erie.
She was born June 30, 1917 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Welsh Fehley. On Aug. 7, 1946 in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Francis B. Halloran, who preceded her in death July 21, 1996.
Mrs. Halloran was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and volunteered as a secretary at the Sacred Heart Rectory and did volunteer work for the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Leslie J. Haas

Leslie J. Haas, 64, of 475 Lance Dr., Ridgway, died unexpectedly in Ridgway Township on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012.
He was born Sept. 12, 1947 in Allentown, a son of Marlowe Arner Haas of Emporium and the late James Haas.
On Aug. 17, 1969 in Williamsburg, Va., he married Janet Hutchens Haas, who survives.

Alice L. Ehrensberger

Alice L. Ehrensberger, 84, of 45 Plum St., St. Joseph's Terrace, Weedville, and formerly of Bucktail Road, St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home after an illness of the past several months.
She was born Dec. 31, 1927, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Allie and Agnes Dollinger Eckert. On April 21, 1947, in St. Marys, she married Wayne L. Ehrensberger, who preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1993.

Country bands to entertain at community concert

Area residents will have the opportunity to hear quality live music on Saturday, March 3, when country bands The Kentucky Headhunters and Confederate Railroad will be perform at a community concert at the St. Marys High School auditorium.
The concert, sponsored by St. Marys Auto Body, is being held to give area residents a fun, affordable, family-friendly night out, according to St. Marys Auto Body owner and concert organizer Sandy Buerk.

Congressman Glenn Thompson makes campaign stop in St. Marys

Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson spoke to area residents at Gunner's Restaurant in St. Marys Friday evening on a multi-stop, multi-county campaign tour. Thompson said government spending must be reined in to alleviate the burden on U.S. citizens and that job creation is a priority. He has co-sponsored legislation in the U.S. house that would help facilitate career and technical training for adults to expand job opportunities, particularly in Elk and other rural counties he represents.

Council hears event organizers' requests

James M. Kiska

James M. Kiska, 55, of 441 Rightmeyer St., St. Marys, died Feb. 23, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born July 3, 1956 in Pittsburgh, son of Chester J. Kiska of Portland Mills and the late Margaret A. “Nancy” McKelvey Kiska.
Mr. Kiska had resided in St. Marys the past 18 years and had attended Chartiers Valley schools. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1972-1978.
