Ice skating under way at Kaulmont Park, weather permitting

Despite the mercurial winter this year, the ice skating rink at Kaulmont Park is operational, though only as the weather permits, according to Winter Park Director Kurt Nesbitt.
"We are up and running now at the skate pond, but with the freezing and melting it is a day-to-day basis," Nesbitt said. "If the rain stays away and the nights continue to get cold we will have the park open on a steady schedule, so let's hope the rain stays away."
Nesbitt explained that there are a few factors that are taken into consideration regarding when the rink opens each year.

Susan V. Zito

Susan V. Zito, 87, of 501 E. Second St., Emporium, died at her residence on Saturday morning, Jan. 28, 2012.
She was born Jan. 29, 1924, in Emporium, a daughter of the late Anthony and Amelia Nicolo Zito.
Susan graduated from Emporium High School. She retired from GTE, where she worked for many years. When she retired she was the only women to hold a patent at GTE Sylvania. Susan was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.

Irma Maria Chirillo

Irma Maria Chirillo, 84, of 501 Market St., Johnsonburg, died Saturday evening, Jan. 28, 2012 at DuBois Nursing home in DuBois following a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 19, 1928 in Colosimi Province of Cosenza, Italy, the daughter of the late Mario and Rosa Colosimi Pastore. On Oct. 4, 1949, in Motta Santa Lucia, Italy, she married Victor F. Chirillo, who survives.

Mini Relay for Life going strong

On Friday evening, South St. Marys Street Elementary School students and parents gathered for the school's third annual Mini Relay for Life.
The school's gymnasium was transformed into a hub of activity as approximately 85 students, from kindergarten to fifth grades, participated in various event stations.
According to Susan Babik, American Cancer Society community income development specialist for the east central division, which includes Elk and Cameron counties, the students succeeded in raising nearly $5,500 for the American Cancer Society.

O'Dell new face at Chamber of Commerce

Ashley O'Dell, new community outreach coordinator at the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, started in her new position in mid-December 2011 and has been busy getting to know various business owners and area residents.
"Mainly I serve as a liaison between the businesses and the Chamber. I go out into the community to listen to business owners' needs, as well as the needs of our community," O'Dell said.

Rebert sentenced to life in prison

BROOKVILLE - A hung jury sentenced former Emporium resident Stephen P. Rebert to life in prison for the shooting deaths of Brockway residents Wayne and Vicky Shugar, both 61, who were found dead April 12, 2010 in their Coal Tipple Road home.
The jury could not come to a unanimous decision on the death penalty, which was being sought by Jefferson County District Attorney Jeffrey Burkett. Eight jurors were for the death penalty and four for life, an automatic sentence of life in prison.

Lady Dutch defeat Brookville Lady Raiders 55-50 in overtime

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team outscored the Brookville Lady Raiders by a 12-7 margin in overtime to record a 55-50 victory.
The game was tied at 43 after 32 minutes of regulation. In the four-minute overtime period, Adair Gennocro sank nine of 12 foul shot opportunities and Kiana Hoohuli hit a field goal and was one-of-two from the foul line to account for the Lady Dutch points.
“The first three quarters were the best basketball we’ve played,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli. The Lady Dutch held a 36-17 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Johnsonburg Rams rout Crusaders 58-36

The Elk County Catholic Crusader boys' basketball squad faced off against the Johnsonburg Rams for the third time this season Friday evening, and for the third time they came away with a loss. Unlike their three-point loss in the opening-round contest of the Elk County Boys' Basketball Holiday Tournament, though, the Rams outplayed the Crusaders on Friday, outscoring them 45-23 over the final three quarters to take a 58-36 victory.

Joseph G. Kronenwetter

Joseph G. Kronenwetter, 92, of 617 Sunset Rd., St. Marys, died on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor following an illness of the past six months.
He was born Jan. 18, 1920 in St. Marys, son of the late George E. and Kathryn Grant Kronenwetter.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1940. He also took businesses courses at Penn State. He was a retired employee of Stackpole Carbon Co., retiring in 1983 with over 40 years of service.

Kersey residents sail off on Semester at Sea

Kersey residents Dennis McGeehan and his wife Deb Shaw have embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. The couple will be on Semester at Sea, a ship that provides educational learning experiences for college students while sailing worldwide to many ports of call.
