Alice P. Garver

January 10, 2012

Alice P. Garver of 208 Zambori St., Reynoldsville, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 at Christ The King Manor in DuBois.
Garver was born on Feb. 22, 1934 in Allans Mills, daughter of the late William D. Stauffer and Mary C. Barnett Stauffer.
She married Arnold W. Garver, who preceded her in death on June 13, 2003.
She retired as an employee of Munot Plastics of Erie after 10 years of service. She was a member of Roseville Independent Chapel in Brookville.

Larry D. Knisely

Larry D. Knisely, 64, of Bennetts Valley Highway, Penfield, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 at DRMC after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 3, 1947 in Renovo, son of the late Elmer Belden and Bernice Knisely.
On June 5, 1970, he married Diana (Caliari) Knisely, who survives.
He served in the Army from 1966 to 1968, receiving the National Defense and Good Conduct Medals. He also worked for five years as Foreman and hyster driver for Metal Wire of Driftwood; three years with Brockway Clay; and 29 years with Carbide Graphite of St. Marys; Falcon Transport, CJ Packing and Catalone Pipe Supply. 

SMA Quarterback Club honors Dutch football program

The St. Marys Area Quarterback Club held their 54th Awards Program Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School Carpin Auditorium.
Following the invocation by Tim Kopp, everyone was welcomed by Bob Luchini, master of ceremonies for the evening. Luchini noted that the St. Marys Area Quarterback Club is an all-volunteer group dedicated to supporting the SMAHS football program.
Quarterback Club President Steve Aul welcomed everyone and said the reason for the change to just an awards program was that the school district had discontinued their banquets due to budget cuts.

Donachy sentenced to life in prison for murder

RIDGWAY - On Monday afternoon, Elk County President Judge Richard Masson handed down a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole to Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, who was found guilty of second-degree murder in the April 5-6, 1999 homicide of Irene Challingsworth, a 56-year-old St. Marys beautician.

Replacement sworn in at SMASD meeting

Monday's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors saw Steve Aul of St. Marys was sworn in as the district's Region 2 representative. He was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Jesse Azzato. Azzato was elected to the position in the November elections, but submitted a letter of resignation prior to assuming his role. The appointment remains effective until the next municipal election in November 2013.

ST. MARYS – The River 98.9 will once again be hosting the Second Annual Polar Sweet Express event sponsored by Ridgway BiLo and Northwest Savings Bank.
CAPSEA [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse] Executive Director Billie Jo Weyant said the popular fundraising event is a one-stop shopping experience for all your Valentine's Day needs.
The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Franklin Center in downtown St. Marys and will feature local vendors.

SMA swim team makes big statement at 2012 Arctic Swim Classic

CLEARFIELD - The SMA swim team made a big statement at the 2012 Arctic Swim Classic at Clearfield High School on Saturday. The annual invitational featured 10 teams from various districts and PIAA classes.
The Dutchmen made a strong showing, capturing second place overall, while the Lady Dutch brought home a fourth-place trophy. This is the first competition for the team, officially kicking off their 2012 season.

SMA gymnastics squad fares well at Bellefonte Bash

St. Marys will travel to Altoona tonight for a 6 p.m. meet

BELLEFONTE – The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad traveled to Bellefonte on Saturday to compete in the Bellefonte Bash Invitational.
"The girls did really well and we are continuing to see our scores go up, especially on our two most difficult events - bars and beam," said St. Marys Area coach Irene McCandless. "We seem to be staying pretty steady score-wise on vault and floor."
McCandless noted that senior Michaela Sorg had an "awesome" floor routine and hit her career highest score of 8.475.
