Large amounts of broken glass strewn along a portion of Market Street and near-riot conditions prompted a thorough discussion about events in which the city's open container law is waived.
Councilman Greg Gebauer brought up the matter during Monday's St. Marys City Council meeting, explaining he was summoned to Market Street at 2 a.m. on Saturday, where upon his arrival he witnessed 50-100 people whom he described as "carrying on, staggering around and being loud."
JOHNSONBURG â€“Â Elk County was burned with another arson case after an early-morning fire torched a residence owned by Albert Lee Abplanalp, age 59, at 208 Church St. in Johnsonburg.
The initial call was placed at 12:58 a.m. as a fire destroyed a single-stall garage, four residential structures, and a vehicle. The residence at 208 Church St. sustained the most damage, as the fire originated in a detached single-stall garage at the property and spread to the main residence situated only a few feet away.
JOHNSONBURG-- An additional charge of theft by unlawful taking, a misdemeanor of the first degree, has been filed against a Ridgway woman already charged with embezzling insurance monies following a fire at her home.
The affidavit alleges that Nancy Jean Bodien, 36, of 45 Fremont Ave. in Ridgway, took into her possession a laptop computer belonging to the WDDH radio station following her resignation from the station on May 29, 2012.
RIDGWAY â€“Â Area youth had a chance to spend time in nature and improve their artistic skills with the "Walk, Talk & Print" program offered by ECCOTA over the past few weeks.
Area students from fourth through eighth grade took to the outdoors around the Rails to Trails and Sandy Beach areas in the morning with Lora Zill. Zill teaches writing and critical analysis at Gannon University, and is also a teaching artist with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She is also a faculty member in a program for gifted public school students at Allegheny College.
The Elk County Catholic High School and St. Marys Area High School golf teams both opened their seasons on Thursday afternoon, competing in the annual St. Marys-DuBois Challenge at Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
ECC finished in first place in the four-school event with 23 points. St. Marys was second with 16 points. DuBois Central Catholic was third with 14 points, and DuBois Area High School was fourth with 7 points. Six golfers from each school participated in the 18-hole contest.
In a move echoed by surrounding township and municipalities, the City of St. Marys plans to sever its ties with Central Tax Bureau (CENTAX), a tax collection agency, appointed in January 2012 by the Elk County Tax Collection Committee (ECTCC) as the permanent income tax collector agency.
"Since that time we've had nothing but problems with CENTAX," said St. Marys City Manager Dave Greene. "We have not received any reports from them, although we have received money. They continue to be behind on distributing the money to us."
Dual enrollment programs providing high school students the opportunity to earn college credits in the course of a normal school day will be offered by the St. Marys Area High School in the upcoming school year.
RIDGWAY - At the most recent meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force, Compliance Assistance Specialist Mark F. Harmon of the Occupational Safety and Health Administrationâ€™s (OSHA) Erie office gave a presentation on the organizationâ€™s role and recent activities.
"We regulate workplace safety," said Harmon of OSHA's chief role.
Lars Oskar Troberg, 89, of 645 Sherry Rd., St. Marys, died on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012 at his residence.
He was born Nov. 16, 1922 on the Aland Island in Sweden, son of the late Karl and Augusta Johanna Helin Troberg.
On Jan. 14, 1953, in Helsinki, Finland, he married Beverly JoAnn Hoffman from Delmar, Dela., who survives.
RIDGWAY - Compliance Assistance Specialist Mark F. Harmon of the Occupational Safety and Health Administrationâ€™s (OSHA) Erie office recently explained the organization's jurisdiction and procedures to members of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
"OSHA is an agency within the Department of Labor. We have the responsibility, we cover workplace safety. The first thing that we would have to establish is that we have a company and we have an employee working for that company. Weâ€™re concerned about the employeeâ€™s safety," Harmon said.
