The fallout over the Jay Township Board of Supervisors' appointment to fill a vacancy within the township's Water Authority continued at Thursday's meeting of the board.
Attendees, including Weedville resident Helen Bonanno, accused Supervisors Jeremy Rippey and Fran Gustafson of violating procedure and exercising a bias in casting their votes, creating arbitrary qualifications for vacancies, and recruiting applicants.
As part of its new summer camp program, the Elk County Catholic School System is offering a plethora of camps ranging from sports, arts, language arts, instrumental music, liturgical and choral choirs to drama, science and geography.
The 18 different camps are open to all area students, including those visiting St. Marys for the summer. Camps are spread throughout the summer to allow interested students the opportunity to participate in multiple camps.
Since his run on NBC's "The Voice" ended last month, Phillip "Pip" Arnold, the 20-year-old singer from Marietta, Ga. and son of St. Marys native Jim Arnold, has been keeping busy working on his first album.
"[Releasing an] album is my number-one priority right now," Arnold said. "I want to get music out to [all my fans]."
He recently started a page on Kickstarter, a website that allows individuals to pledge money to help fund independent projects. According to Arnold, fans can find out more information about this endeavor on Twitter, Facebook, and his website, www.pipmusic.com.
Sahlee J. Courson, 72, of 52 Sabula Lake Rd., DuBois, died Thursday, May 17, 2012 at her residence.
She was born June 19, 1939 in DuBois, the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Agnes Schriner Bowser.
She married Theodore "Ted" Courson, who survives.
She was a homemaker, a member of the First Baptist Church in DuBois and enjoyed hummingbirds and collecting butterflies.
Ruth M. Bauer, 86, of 163 East Oilwell St., St. Marys, died on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec 5, 1925 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Ignatius and Gertrude Fritz Feldbauer.
She was married to the late Walter J. Bauer Sr., who preceded her in death in 1956.
Mrs. Bauer was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of Sacred Heart Church.Â She was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1943. She devoted her life and love to caring for her children and grandchildren, whom she greatly enjoyed spending time with.
BROOKVILLE â€“Â The Elk County Catholic Crusader and Lady Crusader track and field squads competed along with the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch and the Johnsonburg Area Rams and Ramettes in the District 9-AA track and field championships at Brookville Area High School on Friday afternoon.
Cassie Wonderlingâ€™s home run in the home half of the seventh inning gave the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team a 2-1 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders Friday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch got on the board in the fourth inning to take the 1-0 lead. Elk Catholic knotted the game at 1-all with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Elk Catholic left runners stranded at second and third in the top of the seventh. The home half the seventh featured Wonderlingâ€™s walk off home run to center field.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team erupted for seven runs on four hits and two errors to come from behind to defeat the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 9-3 score Friday night at Berwind Park on Senior Night for the Dutchmen.
Elk Catholic led 1-0 after two innings of play. The Dutch scored twice in the third inning for a 2-1 lead. The Crusaders tied the game in the fourth and went up 3-2 in the sixth with a run. St. Marys scored seven times in the home half of the sixth to win the game 9-3.
WEEDVILLE â€“ The Jay Township Board of Supervisors at Thursday's meeting were reluctant to offer guarantees that the township would back an estimated $220,000 in loans for an upcoming Water Authority project.
Water Authority Board Chairman John Friday said in order to secure the loans needed to implement updates to the water treatment plant, the loaner bank is requesting a third party to act as cosigner, guaranteeing the loan would be repaid if the Water Authority were to default.
