Commissioners table tech deals

Elk County commissioners tabled tentative agreements on Tuesday with the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission for technical support.
The agreements were $6,150 for 12 months for the county and a pact for $18,450 for 12 months for the county's 911 facility.

New business weaves together quilting supplies, classes

ST. MARYS - The area's newest quilting store, Tangled Threads, is opening its doors for business today.
Located at 63 Erie Ave. in St. Marys, the new store offers an array of fabrics, including cotton, flannel and batiks, which are hand-dyed fabrics made by using wax as a dye and often resemble watercolor designs.
Additional quilting supplies and notions such as needles, thread, pins, buttons, tape and trims are available for purchase, as well as books and patterns.

CDBG funding revealed

During Monday's St. Marys City Council meeting, a brief public hearing was held as part of the 2011 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Tina Gradizzi, community and economic development coordinator, announced that this year's projects consist of street reconstruction and improvements.
The CDBG Entitlement Program helps to financially assist municipalities with numerous community development needs and principally benefits low- and moderate-income citizens.

Joseph D. McCandless

Joseph D. McCandless, 32, of 225 South Michael St., St. Marys, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 in Kersey unexpectedly.
He was born February 8, 1979, in Ridgway, son of the late James W. McCandless, who died on Sept. 6, 2007; and Debora Stahli McCandless of Dagus Mines, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1999. He was employed at DuBrook, Inc. of St. Marys.

Ruling in favor of forest drilling is upheld

A preliminary injunction in favor of oil and gas drilling in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) will stand.
In a ruling announced Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit endorsed a preliminary injunction issued in December 2009 by U.S. District Court Judge Sean McLaughlin in Erie.
That injunction enjoins the U.S. Forest Service from preparing a study under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) as a “pre-condition” for drilling oil and gas wells in the ANF.

City assists soccer association in relocation of fields

On Monday evening, St. Marys City Council approved the real estate sale for land in the St. Marys Industrial Park at the airport on which a new business, SMC Powder Metallurgy of St. Marys, Inc. plans to construct a facility.
The purchase price of the land was $203,300 and includes one entire lot and a portion of another. The new business plans to create 200 jobs.
As part of this transaction, the city has been working with the St. Marys Soccer Association in finding a new location for their five fields, which are currently situated on the land.

Lady Dutch tennis team downs Clearfield 8-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team raised their record to 5-1 on the season with an 8-1 victory over the Clearfield Lady Bisons Monday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
At first singles, Amy Orr of the Lady Dutch easily defeated Yesh Patel 6-0, 6-0.
At second singles, SMA’s Mary Rosman won her match 6-0, 6-0 over Lauren Whitmen.
Marta Vega of the Lady Dutch won her third singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Rachael Johnson.
At fourth singles, Aubrey Wiesner of the Lady Dutch won her match 6-0, 6-0 over Jen Grenus.
At fifth singles, SMA’s Chelsea Agosti won her match 6-0, 6-0.

Lady Wolves use strong second half to beat St. Marys 3-0

After a slow first half, the Kane Lady Wolves used a strong second half to defeat the St. Marys Lady Dutch 3-0 in a match played at St. Marys Area's soccer field.
Following the game, Kane coach Allie Saquin remarked that she was pleased with her team's second-half effort.

Ridgway Lady Elkers capture Bucktail Tournament

The Ridgway Lady Elker soccer team captured the 2011 Bucktail Tournament title on Saturday by defeating the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders by a 5-0 score.
The tournament was played at the St. Marys Area soccer field.
This was Ridgway’s first Bucktail Tournament crown.
“We finally won the Bucktail Tournament,” said Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena. “This is our season. We have a solid core and the girls just wanted it.”
“I am really happy with everyone’s effort. I am excited for the win. We came up with a good win over a good program. It was a good win over good competition,” he added.

Lady Dutch fall to Bradford 4-1 in consolation game

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team came up short on Saturday morning to the Bradford Lady Owls, losing 4-1 in the consolation match of this year's Bucktail Tournament, which was held at the St. Marys Area High School soccer field.
St. Marys coach Dr. Bob Schmidt remarked that the Lady Dutch squad is "a work in progress."
"Some mistakes in the first half kept [the score] from being close," Schmidt said.
