Irene T. Rieder

October 6, 2011

Irene T. Rieder, 82, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 209 Madison Street, St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011 following a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 12, 1928 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Arnold and Catherine Krug Wurm.
On June 2, 1951 in the St. Mary's Church, she married Thomas Rieder Sr., who preceded her in death on March 26, 1978.

Thomas Edward Clark

Thomas Edward Clark was born on April 15, 1939 in Emporium, the third son of the late Otto and Josephine Schager Clark.

SMA’s Amy Orr wins D9-AA singles crown

DuBOIS - St. Marys Area sophomore Amy Orr won the District 9 Class AA Singles Tennis Championship Wednesday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Orr defeated Brockway’s Brittany Johnson in the championship match 6-3, 6-3.
In the first set, Johnson opened a 2-0 lead. Orr battled back to knot the set at 2-all. It was tied at 3-all before Orr took control and went on to win the first set 6-3.

Mary Rita Valentine

Mary Rita Valentine, 95, of 327 Chestnut Street, St. Marys, died Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at her home. 
She was born May 30, 1916 in St. Marys, daughter of the late John and Josephine Geeck Eckl.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from St. Marys schools.  She was a retired personnel manager of the Stackpole Carbon Corp. and had worked for the Conrad family for many years.
On November 11, 1967 in the Queen of the World Church, she married R. Thomas Valentine, who preceded her in death on September 7, 2011.

Theresa F. Clark

Theresa F. Clark, 87, of Treasure Lake, died on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the Dubois Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born June 1, 1924 in Dagus Mines, a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Jacqueline DeBarba Cavallett.
On October 12, 1957 in Ridgway, she married the late Clayton S. Clark, who preceded her in death on August 27, 1997.
Mrs. Clark was Catholic by faith and had attended St. Michael's Church in DuBois. She enjoyed cooking and catering. She also enjoyed birds, but most of all, she enjoyed caring for her family. 

Louis J. Cenni

Louis J. Cenni, 93, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011.
He was born in Brandy Camp on Oct. 26, 1917, the son of the late Louis J. and Emilia Cenni.
He graduated from Horton Township High School in 1936, the University of Notre Dame in 1940, and Temple Medical School in 1943.
He served overseas in World War II and the Korean War. He remained in the U.S. Army Reserves until his retirement as a colonel in 1978.

ECC’s Kristy Hanes qualifies for PIAA Western Regional

Elk County Catholic’s Kristy Hanes qualified for the PIAA Girls’ Western Regional Golf Tournament by tying for second place at Tuesday’s District 9 Girls’ Golf Championship held at Kane. The top three golfers qualify for the Western Regional.
The Western Regional is set for Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Toms Run Golf Course in Blairsville.
Redbank Valley’s Samantha Dinger placed first with her 84. Hanes and Union’s Larissa Roberts tied for second with 87s.

Crusaders take 1-0 OT win over Dutchmen

When it comes to cross-town rivalry boys' soccer games, there is just something about overtime.
Of the three times the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and Elk County Catholic Crusaders have played each other this season, the last two games have ended up going into overtime. The Crusaders have emerged the victor of all three match-ups between the two teams this season, notching the third win with a 1-0 score on a goal by Sam Mosebarger a few minutes into the first overtime period in a match played at the SMAHS soccer field on Tuesday afternoon.

Council addresses business items

Among the business items approved by City Council during Monday's worksession was the sale of three St. Marys City Police Department vehicles.
City Manager Dave Greene said the sale was conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m at City Hall. The bids were advertised on Sept. 12 and 16.
The following were the highest bidders: car number one was awarded to Chicago Motors of Chicago, Ill., for a bid of $807; car number two was awarded to Eric Groll of Parkview Road for $915; and car number three was awarded to Ted Garner for $1,257.

Cooperative Extension office composition changing

A string of layoffs at the Penn State Cooperative Extension office have had officials revamping the program.
"We went through a series of layoffs, so with those layoffs that requires some changes," said Don Tanner, an official from the Penn State Cooperative Extension office who on Tuesday attended an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting. "Among those changes includes Elk County, and several individuals were let go-- we let go of 20-plus field staff in September and more reductions will be coming shortly."
