Updates announced for CDBG program

City Council approved the 2012 CDBG application, which included water/sewer/road improvements in the form of multi-year projects.
City of St. Marys Community Development Block Grant Coordinator Tina Gradizzi was in attendance during Monday evening's workshop, where she explained the scope of the project.
As part of the project, 2011 CDBG funding will be combined with 2012 funding.
Gradizzi emphasized the project will go forward once she receives a positive response from residents on the citywide income survey.

Energy savings could exceed $500K

A lengthy process came to fruition Tuesday as the Elk County Commissioners approved an energy-saving initiative that could save county officials and taxpayers over $500,000 in the next 20 years.
"Bekki Titchner and I have been developing a plan to make the county buildings as energy-efficient as possible," said Jodi Foster, community and economic development coordinator for the county's planning department. "In doing so, we have hired a company called FIT Optimized Solutions to do an energy audit to tell us what the best solutions are for us to make our buildings more energy-efficient.

Council approves creation of new wastewater position

Members of City Council unanimously approved the creation of a new management position at the city's wastewater treatment plant.
According to City Manager Dave Greene, the city created the position of assistant plant supervisor, a position which has remained unfilled since 2002.

Elizabeth J. "Betty" Dietz

February 8, 2012

Elizabeth J. "Betty" Dietz, 86, of 106 Linwood Ave., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 15, 1925 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Edward and Lillian Davis Cheatle.
On June 14, 1947 in St. Mark's Church in Emporium, she married James H. Dietz, who survives.

Brookville Raiders roll past Crusaders 52-42

The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team was handed a 52-42 loss by the Brookville Raiders on Tuesday evening in a game played at ECCHS.
The Crusaders held a 7-4 lead after the first quarter. Brookville took over in the second quarter, outscoring ECC 15-6 to take a 19-13 lead at the half. The Crusaders closed the advantage slightly in the third quarter, outscoring the Raiders 18-15 to make the score 34-31 headed into the final period of play before Brookville put the game away with a strong fourth quarter.

Punxsy records 42-36 D9 League win over Lady Dutch

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch suffered their third straight setback last night as the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks held off the Lady Dutch for a 42-36 District 9 League victory.
The Lady Chucks were able to lead by seven points at the end of the first period, 11 at halftime and six at the end of the third quarter.
St. Marys was able to come back to knot the game at 36 with 4:18 left but could not come up with the offense.
“We didn’t play well defensively tonight,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli. “We didn’t come to play four quarters. The girls just didn’t seem to be focused tonight.”

Milton A. (Joe) Leonard, 101, of Apple Street, Weedville, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at the Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys. 
He was born Jan. 31, 1911 in LeContes Mills, Pa., the son of the late James O. and Fannie (Krise) Leonard.
On Nov. 17, 1935, he married Loletha (Kunes) Leonard. She preceded him in death July 6, 1997. 

Officials oppose controversial sections of national defense act

Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday adopted a resolution Tuesday proclaiming their opposition to two controversial sections of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012.
Officials said Tuesday that the sections in question, Sections 1021 and 1022, "as proposed, in limited circumstances," allows an American citizen to be "detained by our own United States government and by our Armed Forces" and detention "could last without trial until the end of the hostilities currently authorized by the authorization for use of military force."
