Progress report discussion focuses on future

During Thursday night's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District board of directors, Superintendent Ann Kearney presented information on the annual yearly progress report and explained how the district will adopt and meet new state standards and requirements related to curriculum and graduation.
"We are now transferring our instruction from the Pennsylvania standard [assessment] anchors that we were teaching to and now we're trying to transition over to the Keystone Exams," Kearney said.

Fox Twp. Supervisors approve sewer authority loan

The Fox Township Supervisors approved interim funding of $70,000 for the Fox Township Sewer Authority during their Tuesday meeting.
The money will be used to pay the $68,933 balance of the authority's Headworks project, which involved the creation of a pre-filtration system which helps to decrease the wear and tear on the plant.

Parana making his own mold in industry, hospitality

St. Marys native Bill Parana is a busy man. Now living in the northwestern mountain area of Hendersonville, N.C., he holds down both a full-time and a part-time job and finds them both interesting, especially as they are quite different from each other.

Eileen J. "Cissy" Wortman

Eileen J. "Cissy" Wortman, 94, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys, and formerly of 179 E. 4th Street, Emporium,
died on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born July 28, 1917 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Gervase and Kathryn Stockman Rigard.
She was married to the late Regis "Wheatie" Wortman, who preceded her in death in January 2000.

Leo F. Greenthaner

Leo F. Greenthaner, 88, a resident of Silver Creek Terrace, St. Marys, died unexpectedly Friday morning, Jan. 6, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Dec. 20, 1923 in Cadogan, son of the late Fred and Mary Kurzinger Greenthaner.
On September 11, 1958 in Emporium, he married Alice Louise McMaster, who preceded him in death on April 9, 2010.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended New Bethlehem schools. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Corp., retiring in 1986 after 38 years of service.

Ridgway wrestling downs St. Marys, 46-24 Thursday

Ridgway wrestling won six matches by pinfall and nine overall in a 46-24 victory over St. Marys Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
"The kids were very aggressive," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber said. "We're real pleased because we've been under the weather. The kids wrestled hard, there were some real pleasant surprises there."
The match opened at 182 pounds as Kyle Caggiano bumped up to wrestle Joe McLaughlin of St. Marys.

Lady Crusaders down Lady Rovers 47-29

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team rolled to a 47-29 victory over the Brockway Lady Rovers Wednesday evening at ECCHS.
The two teams kept the score fairly close throughout the first half. ECC held a 10-7 lead at the end of the first period and extended their advantage to 25-15 at halftime. Brockway closed the gap slightly by the end of the third period, reducing ECC's advantage to 31-22.
"We looked a little rusty tonight, but we're playing good defense again," said ECC coach Ken Pistner.
However, Pistner noted that the team missed a lot of shots throughout the game.

SMASD school year reviewed at workshop

Thursday's workshop meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors saw the presentation of the district's annual progress report. Superintendent Ann Kearney said in taking time to "reflect back on the accomplishments of these past twelve months, the community can stand proud of the school district's efforts to provide programs that embody the district's mission of 'empowering learners for the 21st century.'"

Train mania for Schloder, friends

ST. MARYS – A train rumbles through a mountain tunnel, steam pumping and its whistle alerting the nearby town to its presence. While it's a familiar sight to many area residents, this isn't a real scene but a creation known simply as "Tom's Trains," a train-focused exhibit on a large platform at the home of Tom Schloder on East Eschbach Road in St. Marys.

Betty M. Wonderly

Betty M. Wonderly, 75, of 938 Troup Valley Hill Rd., Mount Pleasant Mills, and formerly of Kersey, died suddenly on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Feb. 17, 1936 in Kersey, a daughter of the late Irwin Sylvester and Madeline Minnick Wonderly.
Betty spent many years caring for and kenneling dogs, and had a great love for her dog, Dee Dee. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed coming home to spend Christmas with them ever year. She also enjoyed shopping and crafts.
