William L. Jacob

August 25, 2011

William L. Jacob, 94, of Silver Creek Terrace, St. Marys, died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born October 4, 1916, in St. Marys, son of the late A. Thomas and Catherine Kriegel Jacob. He married Rose McLeod and she preceded him in death on May 6, 1979. He then married Virginia Richards and she preceded him in death on January 2, 1995.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1934. He was a self-employed plasterer.

Lois J. Bryndel

Lois J. Bryndel, 82, of 126 Elk Ave., Ridgway, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born August 10, 1929, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late William B. and Florence C. Hathorn Wagoner.
She married James E. Bryndel, who predeceased her on February 22, 2004.
She had been a lifelong Ridgway resident and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. She was a longtime hospital volunteer and she attended many prayer groups. She especially enjoyed going out to eat with her family and friends.

Joseph R. "Happy Joe" Naglich

Joseph R. "Happy Joe" Naglich, 80, of 237 Grandview Road, St. Marys, and formerly of Emporium, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois.
He was born June 7, 1931 in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Joseph and Mary Janes Naglich.
On August 28, 1965 in Erie, he married Betty Riedl Naglich, who survives.

Dr. Joshua Robert Schmidt

Dr. Joshua Robert Schmidt, 29, of Clinton Township, Mich., and formerly of St. Marys, died at his home on Monday, August 22, 2011, surrounded by friends and family after a courageous five-year battle against cancer.
Joshua was born to Dr. Robert Joseph and Constance Moore Schmidt in Pittsburgh on February 26, 1982. He married Erin Brianne McCarthy of Orange Township, Ohio, on December 30, 2006.

Homer C. Wolfe Jr.

Homer C. Wolfe Jr., age 62, Powers Avenue, Johnsonburg, died at home, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, after a short illness.
He was born Oct. 8, 1948, in Ridgway, son of Homer C. and Helen M. (Fitch) Wolfe Sr., deceased.
He married Arlean M. (Roessler) in June of 2009, she survives in Berlin Center, Ohio.
A graduate of Johnsonburg High School, he served for three years as a Marine in Vietnam. He retired from the State Police Agency of Oklahoma state and in 2005 retired as a Sergeant from the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He worked locally as a driver for ATA for six years.

WIC concerns surface at meeting

After a meeting last month revealed that the Women, Infants and Children [WIC] program out of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] may face a $92,000 budget cut for the new fiscal year, officials expressed concern Wednesday morning after the figures had a chance to sink in.

Sunday hunting could one day be reality

Over the past several years, numerous proposals have been offered in the State Legislature to eliminate or significantly change the current law regarding expansion of Sunday hunting allowances. But any expansion of Sunday hunting, which now allows just fox and coyote hunting, has been soundly denounced by the members of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Ernest Mattiuz, vice president of the Elk County Farm Bureau.

ERHC will continue to accept insurance plans

The well-publicized feud between University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and health insurer Highmark has many western Pennsylvania residents worrying that they may lose access to services from UPMC when a contract between the two entities expires next year, especially as many residents carry Highmark insurance.

Variety Shoppe offers array of products, gowns, costumes

The Variety Shoppe, a co-op store located at 10 Erie Ave. in downtown St. Marys, offers an array of products, all sold by local vendors.
The store was initially opened as The Shop on Depot in October 2010, but recently was renamed and moved to the former Smith's Sports Store building.
"We are now in a better location with a bigger place and have more traffic," said Donna Prechtl Nussbaum, store owner.

August 25 is 'National Second-Hand Wardrobe Day,' a day to consider donating some of your own lightly used or outgrown clothing, raid a relative's closet, or go browsing at your local thrift store.
For most people, the stigma previously attached to shopping at thrift stores has vanished. They have become hip places where young people go to find vintage T-Shirts, vinyl records, accessories and various knick-knacks. Two area shops are Goodwill, found in various locations in Elk County, and the ReSale Shop in St. Marys.
