Dutch golfers defeat Brockway 235-248

The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen golf squad picked up a win over visiting Brockway on Thursday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, defeating the Rovers 235 to 248.
"The team played really well today," said St. Marys coach Dan Vollmer following the match. "It was a much-needed win and we look forward to our home match against Ridgway and Kane next week."
Medalists for the day were St. Marys' Sam Miller and Brockway's Andy Genevro and Bret Corr, all of whom shot 11-over-par rounds of 46.

Elk Catholic golfers pick up 207-215 win over Ridgway

The Elk County Catholic High School golf squad picked up a victory over the visiting Ridgway Elkers on Thursday afternoon at the St. Marys Golf Club. The Crusaders won the match 207-215, with the top five scores from each team counting toward the total.
The medalist for the day was Elk Catholic's Elliott Struble with a four-over-par round of 39. The high scorer for Ridgway was Josh Roselli with a 41.

Lady Crusader tennis downs Lady Chucks 8-1

The Lady Crusader tennis squad defeated the Lady Chucks 8-1 on Thursday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks in St. Marys. Despite the threat of rain, the teams were able to get in all their matches before the wet weather returned early in the evening.
"The weather cooperated and we were able to play a very competitive tennis match against a really nice Punxsy squad," said ECC head coach Pete Meier. "Punxsy has improved tremendously since last year. They have a wonderful group of young ladies, and it was a very enjoyable match to watch."

School and community programs emphasize suicide awareness

September marks Suicide Awareness Month, and Dickinson Center, Inc.'s Children's Prevention Services is conducting several events through its Signs of Suicide Program (SOS) in an effort to promote community awareness of the issue.
Recently Jennifer Dippold, director of Children's Prevention Services; Tracey Meyers, SOS program supervisor for Elk County; and City of St. Marys Police Chief Todd Caltagarone met with St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Ann Kearney to discuss offering the "Protecting Kids Online" (PKO) program within the public schools this year.

New look for Elk County Catholic School System

Students in the newly formed Elk County Catholic School System (ECCSS) are also sporting a new look this school year, with uniforms being phased in that are designed to better reflect the unity of the system as a whole.

Ruling on forest stone may help in drilling case

Last week’s judicial ruling on the ownership of sandstone in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) may help bring about a favorable court decision for forest oil and gas well drillers.
That’s the message given by R. Timothy McCrum, a Washington-based attorney who represents the Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association (PIOGA) and Minard Run Oil of Bradford.

Historical Society hosts annual Cemetery Walk

The Elk County Historical Society will be hosting its 5th Annual Cemetery Walk this Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., an oral history will be presented in the Center House Museum for those who cannot walk the cemetery. Refreshments will be served after the program.
The guided walking tour of Pine Grove, St. Leo and Thayer Cemeteries will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10. To take part in the cemetery walk, meet at the Pine Grove Cemetery at 3 p.m.

R. Thomas Valentine, 87, of 327 Chestnut St., St. Marys, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at his home following an illness of the past year.
He was born Jan. 29, 1924 in St. Marys, son of the late William and Minnie Cable Valentine. On Nov. 11, 1967, in the Queen of the World Church, he married Mary Rita Eckl, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of the St. Marys High School. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company, retiring in 1985 after 42 years of service.

Thomas J. Stefano Sr., 74, of 164 State St., St. Marys, died early Wednesday morning, Sept. 7, 2011, at his residence following an illness of the past month.
He was born Aug. 29, 1937 in Ridgway, son of the late Michael and Anna Mae Zuchowski Stefano.
On Jan. 9, 1960, in Cambridge, Ohio, he married Elizabeth Mae Gray, who survives.

Lady Dutch volleyball downs Kane 3-0

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team opened their home season on Tuesday by sweeping the Kane Lady Wolves by a 3-0 score at the SMAHS “Dutch Oven”.
St. Marys won the first game 25-19, took the second game 25-21 and won the third game 25-20.
“I thought we played with intensity tonight,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt.
“We served the ball decently but I would like to see some harder hits,” said the coach.
“I thought we covered well tonight. We gave the game ball to Chelsea Gregori who finished the night with 34 digs,” said Vogt.
