The St. Marys 11-12-year-old all-stars came from behind to beat the Ridgway all-stars by a 10-7 score Sunday afternoon at Memorial Park.
Ridgway was leading the contest 7-5 going into the top half of the sixth. St. Marys came up with five runs in that inning to record the 10-7 victory.
St. Marys is in action tonight at 6 p.m. against the loser of the Punxsutawney vs. DuBois game that was also played on Sunday. This will be the finals of the loserâ€™s bracket.
The St. Marys Little League Junior All-Stars used a strong nine-run first inning to set the stage for their victory over the Ridgway Little League All-Stars Sunday afternoon at Memorial Park. After building a large lead, St. Marysâ€™ batters were able to answer Ridgwayâ€™s runs and cruised to a 14-4 victory in five innings.
A sizable crowd gathered on the grounds of the St. Marys Golf Club on Saturday as they awaited the annual firework display. The ideal summer weather made for a clear night to view the fireworks from throughout the city. The display is part of the annual St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Celebration.
A great crowd was on hand for the 4th of July celebration in Fox Township held on Sunday, July 3. There were many activities and all types of entertainment. Area youngsters entertained the crowd prior to the fireworks on Sunday evening; â€śUncle Samâ€ť could be seen making his way around the Fox Township Community Park interacting with revelers; and train rides proved popular with individuals of all ages who turned out to join in the celebration.
RIDGWAY - The Elk County Tea Party hosted its Freedom Rally yesterday morning to a large audience on the steps of the Elk County Courthouse.
Among the many guest speakers were U.S. Representative Glenn 'GT' Thompson (PA-5) and State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk).
Floyd C. "Pinky" Herzing, 82, of 1910 Bucktail Trail, St. Marys, died on Monday, July 4, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born April 27, 1929 in St. Marys, a son of the late William and Mary Garbic Herzing.
On November 25, 1950, he married Ethel "Eppie" Schauer Herzing, who survives.
Mr. Herzing was a member of Queen of the World Church, where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was aÂ veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked at Stackpole Carbon for more than 25 years, and also worked for ARCO and Hughes Aircraft.Â
Della Marie Harmon, 92, of West Logan Ave., DuBois, died Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Christ the King Manor.
Born on Nov. 8, 1918 in Blacklick, she was the daughter of the late Daniel L. & Amanda A. (Kinter) Dunlap.
She was married to Paul E. Harmon for 70 years. He survives.
She was a 1937 graduate of Blairsville High School. She had been employed as a beautician in Indiana, Pa., and had worked at the Penn Traffic Company in DuBois. She was also a dog groomer for many years.
Advancing on passed balls played a major role in the St. Marys Little League Softball Minor League All-Stars' 8-4 victory over Brookville on Friday evening. Six of St. Marys' eight runs were the result of passed balls.
Rebekka Bauer worked all six innings for St. Marys, giving up one hit, walking nine and striking out 11. Brookville's Carlie McManigle also went the distance, giving up two hits, walking six and striking out nine.
St. Marys' two hits came on a triple by Josie Smith and a double by Bauer. Brookville's lone hit was a single by Bailey Ganoe in the second inning.
The Punxsutawney 9-10-year-old Little League Baseball all-stars eliminated the St. Marys team Friday night by a 6-4 score in nine innings. The game was played at Memorial Park.
St. Marys finished play in the District 10 South Division Tournament with a 2-2 record.
St. Marys had eight hits in the contest. Jared Groll had a triple and a single while Jesse McKee, Nate Beimel and Alec Wehler each had a double and a single. Ryan Fritz also singled.
The St. Marys Legion baseball team closed out their regular season Thursday night by taking a doubleheader from Fox Township. St. Marys won the first game by a 10-6 score and took the nightcap 6-5.
St. Marys finished regular season play with a 14-1 record, while Fox finished 10-5.
The Elk County Legion League playoffs started Friday night, with Kane going to Bradford. The rest of the league will begin on Tuesday.
