Allen F. Gursky

June 15, 2011

Allen F. Gursky, 16, of 2885 River Rd., Weedville, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, as a result of an ATV accident.
He was born July 8, 1994 in DuBois, son of Franklin G. Summerson and Ann M. Gurksy, who survive.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and had just completed his junior year at St. Marys Area High School.
He was involved with football and wrestling in high school.

Steven M. Glatt

Steven M. Glatt, 16, of 301 Erie Ave., St. Marys, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011 in Jay Township as a result of an ATV accident.
He was born Nov. 30, 1994, in Buffalo, N.Y., son of Ronald Glatt of St. Marys and Leslie Neal of St. Marys and her close friend, Steven Caskey.
He had resided in St. Marys since 2003 and had just completed his junior year at St. Marys Area High School.
Steven was a member of the Shiloh Presbyterian Church, was involved in football, track and wrestling in high school, and was a member of summer league baseball.

Jerry Feldbauer

Jerry Feldbauer, 83, of Levittown, died on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Lower Bucks Hospital.
He was born in St. Marys, the son of the late Herman and Ann (Jesberger) Feldbauer.
In 1949 in the Sacred Heart Church in St. Marys, he married Eleanor Krieg, who survives.
Mr. Feldbauer served with the Merchant Marines and later the 11th Airborne Division in Japan.
He was employed with Purex Corp. in Bristol for many years and also owned Hawk Motors until retiring in 1993. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #960.

Rita Jane Selle

Rita Jane Selle, 93, of 651 S. St. Marys Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the UPMC Cranberry Place Skilled Nursing in Cranberry Township after a yearlong battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 2, 1917 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Englebert and Mary Woelfel Cassady.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Sacred Heart School and was a graduate of St. Benedict's Academy, Class of 1935. She was an employee of the former St. Marys Trust Co. and also was a secretary for the Trambley Law Office.

St. Marys Legion opens season with 6-4 victory

The St. Marys American Legion Baseball team opened their season Wednesday night with a 6-4 victory over the Bradford Legion at Berwind Park.
“I thought the team played well together for their first game of the season,” said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi. “Bradford hit the ball hard against our pitching.”
Bradford had 11 hits in the contest. Kevin Hoy started on the mound for St. Marys and worked three innings, giving up nine hits and striking out three. Ryan Uhl worked the final four innings, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out seven.

Serra Catholic ends Crusader season with 11-5 win

BROCKWAY - The Serra Catholic Eagles ended the Elk County Catholic Crusader season Monday in the first round of the PIAA Class A tournament by an 11-5 score.
The game was played at the Brockway Area High School field.
The Eagles took advantage of a four-run first inning and a five-run sixth inning to record the victory. The Crusaders rallied for three runs in the home half of the seventh, but it was a little too late.

Groundbreaking held for Bennetts Valley Senior Center

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon along Plum Street at the future site of the Bennetts Valley Senior Center.
According to Kevin Wolfel, the general contractor on the project, work on the new facility is expected to begin next week and construction of the 3,300-square-foot facility is expected to take between five and six and a half months. Wolfel has been working as a consultant on the project for the past three years and noted that he is contracted for a seven-month period, though he did not anticipate construction taking that long.

New senior center all about partnerships

Bill Orzechowski, executive director of the Office of Human Services in Ridgway, addressed the sizable crowd that gathered along Plum Street in Jay Township on Wednesday afternoon for the groundbreaking ceremony for the community's new senior center.
Orzechowski referred to the event as an "exciting day" and "a special day in the life of the Valley and a special day in the life of the Bennetts Valley Senior Center."
He remarked that it was especially noteworthy that a new facility was being constructed with the purpose of being a senior center.

Local branch of Cancer Society wins award for fundraising efforts

The American Cancer Society Elk County Chapter received the Platinum Award recognizing the organization as the sixth best chapter for income growth in 2009-10 as presented by The Pennsylvania Division, Inc. Income Development.
In 2010 the Relay for Life of Elk County raised just over $81,000, surpassing their goal of $62,000.
Susan Babik of St. Marys, income development specialist for the American Cancer Society's East Central Division, including Elk County, said the organization hopes to raise $86,000.

Quesenberry reflects on senior center project

Elk County Planning Commission Director Matt Quesneberry noted during Wednesday afternoon's groundbreaking ceremony for the new Bennetts Valley senior center that until recently, he thought heights were his only fear.
"[That was the case] until I was invited to speak here this afternoon, and I realized my second fear was saying 'no' to an under-five-foot senior citizen from the Valley," Quesenberry said of Bennetts Valley Senior Center President Dolores Youngmark.
