County judge bans cellphones in courtrooms

SMETHPORT – The use of cellphones in courtrooms has been banned for several years.
Now it’s illegal to even possess a cellphone in a McKean County court facility.
President County Judge John Pavlock has issued an order against “the use and possession of any electronic devices” in any county courtroom.
In addition to cellphones, the banned devices include video cameras, camera phones and personal data assistants (PDAs).
According to the judge’s order, the county security staff and the McKean County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for “enforcement of this policy.”

Reed bound over on trespass charge

ST. MARYS - John Augustus "Jake" Reed, 18, of 370 Brusselles St., St. Marys, was held to court on a misdemeanor charge of defiant trespass and had a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct dismissed following a preliminary hearing and arraignment at District Judge Donald Wilhelm's office on Tuesday afternoon.
Wilhelm set standard bail at $1,000 non-monetary, unsecured, with a formal arraignment scheduled for July 5 at 3 p.m. at the Elk County Courthouse.

Grant to help highlight recycling

Area residents will soon have an extra incentive to utilize the Community Recycling Center, located at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys. The center is currently open three days a week and collects a variety of recyclable material, such as number 1 and 2 plastic bottles and cardboard.
Bekki Titchner, recycling/solid waste coordinator, explained that at the end of May she was approved for a Stackpole Family Foundation Grant to help fund some incentives at the center.

Ridgway community salutes 'Old Glory'

Local law enforcement agents, dignitaries and citizens gathered Tuesday night at the Ridgway Elks Lodge No. 872 B.P.O.E. for a 45-minute Flag Day ceremony featuring several speakers, including Paul "Ted" Bullers, Mamie Mader and the Honorable Richard Masson, President Judge of Elk County.
"The purpose of the service is to honor our country's flag and to celebrate the anniversary of its birth," Bullers said. "It is quite appropriate that this service should be held by the Order of Elks, an organization that is distinctly American and intensely patriotic."

School board approves final budget

The 2011-12 St. Marys Area School District budget was unanimously approved on Monday evening by members of the school board. The budget shows total expenditures of $23,914,421 and includes a .57-mill property tax increase to area residents.
The tax increase will result in a $14 increase to residents who own a $50,000 home, with their total property taxes estimated at $804 for the year. Total millage for the district next year will be 32.35 mills for real estate tax.

Seminar providing basic information on Marcellus Shale

The Elk County Gas Task Force is hosting the first in a series of educational seminars on Wednesday evening at St. Marys Area Middle School from 6 to 8 p.m.
Elk County Commissioner and Task Force Chairperson June Sorg, along with Jodi Foster, Elk County Planning Department's community and economic development coordinator, have worked together on planning the seminar.

Brockport man killed in crash

HORTON TWP. – A Brockport man was killed as a result of a one-vehicle crash Friday evening in Horton Township. The Ridgway-based state police report investigating the crash, which occurred on June 10 at 10:15 p.m. on SR 219, 410 feet north of an unnamed street in Horton Township. According to police, Clarence L. Russell, 57, of Brockport, was traveling south on SR 219 in a 2001 Ford Ranger at a high rate of speed. The Ford left the southbound lane of travel, entering the west berm. The vehicle then impacted the guiderail and continued in a southerly direction along the guiderail.

Summer Reading Program under way at library

The annual Summer Reading Program is once again under way at the St. Marys Public Library. Registration for the program began on June 1 and will continue throughout the remainder of the month.
Vicki Miller, head of Children's Services, explained that the purpose of the month-long registration is to try to make things easier on parents or other individuals who have to provide transportation to and from the library for the area youth taking part in the program, which is open to individuals age 18 and under.

Pair of recent RHS graduates enter into business world

Two recent Ridgway Area High School graduates are getting a real-world education before heading to college this fall.
Lou Stilwell and Ben Jaques are operating Lou's Canoes in Hallton this summer.
Both Stilwell and Jaques graduated from the high school as members of the Class of 2011. Both are attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the fall for business management and entrepreneurship and will be roommates.

Fireworks fundraiser set for Friday

Local residents will forget casual Friday when there is Fireworks "Fun"draising Friday, taking place June 17 in the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce parking lot as part of an effort to raise funds for St. Marys' annual firework display on July 2 at the St. Marys Golf Club.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., patrons are encouraged to drop off firework donations while enjoying a free hot dog, donated by Pfaffs Market, and a beverage, donated by First Commonwealth Bank. Drive-thru donations are also welcome.
