Janice S. Wilson, 74, of West Center Street, Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor following a brief illness.
She was born October 2, 1936 in Ridgway, son of the late Leo “Pat” and Carolyn (Harriger) Divany.

Pheasants Forever preparing Youth Outdoor adventure

Officials in the Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 are hard at work fundraising to create an endowment for assisting in this year's Youth Outdoor Adventure scheduled for Sept. 16-18.
"It all started with a dream to take local terminally ill or permanently disabled youth on outdoor adventures," said Jane Bryndel, a Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 member and treasurer also charged with publicity responsibilities.
"We feel we are ready for our first event this September. These events will be a unique experience to the selectee, and will provide a fulfilling and memorable experience to the family."

Andrew Patrick, 85, of 313 Clarion Rd., Johnsonburg, died on Wednesday evening, May 11, 2011 at his residence.
He was born on Feb. 2, 1926 in Wilcox, son of the late John and Mary Yankovich Patrick.
He married Marion A. Sprague on July 5, 1952 in Sheffield. She died on Oct. 10, 1990.
He resided in Johnsonburg most of his life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church and Central Hose Co.
He was a Navy veteran, having served in World War II in the Pacific Theater as a Seaman 1st Class with the 10th Beach Battalion and aboard the USS Griggs.

Jay Township Volunteer Fire Company seeking members

The Jay Township Volunteer Fire Company, which serves both Jay and Benezette townships, is attempting to proactively combat its declining membership by holding an informational meeting for individuals who may be interested in volunteering in an emergency or non-emergency setting. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the township fire hall on Cleveland Street.
According to fire chief John Schneider, the declining membership is due both to members retiring and to a general loss of interest in the department by the community.

ECC, SMA performers combine music and motion

Indoor performance groups from Elk County Catholic and St. Marys Area high schools turned in impressive performances during the culmination of their seasons at the Atlantic Coast Championships recently held in Wildwood, N.J.
Each SMA group finished in the top 10 of their class, with the dance team bringing home top honors and a championship banner for the eighth time in nine years. The colorguard placed eighth out of 13 units, while the drumline placed ninth out of 21 units.

Dutch, Lady Crusaders capture Elk County track titles

JOHNSONBURG - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch and the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader track and field teams won their respective Elk County Track and Field championships Thursday at the 2011 Elk County Track and Field Meet held at the Johnsonburg complex.
The Dutch won the boys’ title with 81 points. Elk Catholic was second with 77 and Johnsonburg third with 28.
The Lady Crusaders won the girls’ meet with 93 points, followed by Johnsonburg with 53.50 and St. Marys with 41.50.

Dutch tennis defends District 9-AA championship

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team successfully defended their District 9 Class AA team title Wednesday when they defeated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 4-1 score in a match played at Benzinger Park.
“It was a very, very good match. The boys did well,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky. “We spent a long time preparing for this, especially with the weather.”
“It’s nice to see the team repeat as District 9 champions,” she added.
The Dutch went up 1-0 when Brandon Romain defeated Ben Wortman 6-1, 6-2 at second singles.

Joan G. Hoffman

Joan G. Hoffman, 81, formerly of 696 JoJo Rd., Kane, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born April 10, 1930, in St. Marys, she was a daughter of the late Albin and Gertrude Kaiser Kraus. 
On Sept. 6, 1948, in St. Marys, she married Paul R. Hoffman Sr., who preceded her in death in 2003.

Ronald E. "Dingo" Bullers

Ronald E. "Dingo" Bullers, 64, of 416 Mill St., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a brief illness.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1946 in Ridgway, son of the late William L. and Hattie Schenk Bullers.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1964. He belonged to the Central Hose Co., Kane Country Club, Johnsonburg Elks Club and Rolfe Sportsmen's Club. He was a former Knothole, Little League and American Legion baseball coach and was an avid golfer.
