Kevin William Herzing

Kevin William Herzing, 51, of Opelika, Ala., died on Thursday, April 21, 2011.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1959, in St. Marys, son of James E. Herzing and the late Juanise E. Herzing.
He spent the majority of his life in Opelika, Ala., where he had many loving friends and clients in Opelika. If your car needed repair, most people came to Kevin. NASCAR made him happy, and Auburn football was his passion.

Area youngsters enjoy Easter egg hunt

Rainy weather on Saturday did not deter youngsters at Sacred Heart from enjoying the parish's annual Easter egg hunt. The egg hunt was one of several scheduled to be held in the area. Due to the weather, the well-attended event was moved indoors, with age groups being directed to various locations throughout the Sacred Heart Activity Center. In addition to the candy found in their eggs, children also received additional goodies from the Easter Bunny, who made a special appearance at the event. Hopping down the bunny trail for a good cause

The weather in St. Marys was cool, damp and gloomy on Saturday morning; however, this did little to dampen the spirits of around 500 individuals who participated in the inaugural Bunny Hop 5K run/walk. The event raised over $10,000 to benefit the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
"[The amount of participants] was probably over double what we were expecting," said Taylor Frank, who coordinated the event along with her sister, Carly, and Rachael, Michael and Daniel Paladino, in honor of their mothers.

Frank Maletto

Frank Maletto, 53, of 2044 Mefferts Run Rd., Wilcox, died Thursday evening, April 21, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 11, 1957 in St. Marys, son of the late Orlando "Popeye" and Borgia McDivitt Maletto.
On Oct. 28, 2006, he married Laurie J. Taylor, who survives.

School board approves business items

April 22, 2011

Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of School Directors approved various items during their recent meeting.
Among them were the approval of Nathaniel J. Schmidt as the solicitor for the district for the 2011-2012 school year at a rate of $125 per hour.

Supervisors award bid for paving project

The Jay Township Supervisors opened bids during their recent meeting for a paving project that will take place later this year along a portion of the Caledonia Road.
Bids were received from three different companies. According to the supervisors, bids were submitted in the amounts of $219,569.80 from Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc.; $187,168 from HRI, Inc.; and $191,827.80 from New Enterprise. The supervisors unanimously approved awarding the bid to HRI, which was the lowest responsible bidder.

ECC track teams sweep SMA squads Thursday

The Elk County Catholic track and field teams swept the St. Marys Area squads Thursday in a meet held at the ECCHS track and field complex.
The Crusaders defeated the Dutchmen 86-64, while the Lady Crusaders downed the Lady Dutch 108-42.
In the boys’ meet, Elk Catholic was led by quadruple winners Dan Steudler and Jared Schaut. Steudler won the 400 dash, 800 run and was a member of the 1600 and 3200 relay teams. Schaut won the 200 dash, 300 hurdles, triple jump and was a member of the winning 1600 relay team.

Lady Dutch defeat Altoona Lady Mountain Lions 5-1

The St. Marys Area High School Lady Dutch softball team picked up their third win of the season and second league win with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Altoona Lady Mountain Lions in a game played at the St. Marys Area High softball field under very chilly conditions.

Dutch tennis team downs Johnsonburg 8-1

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team improved to 4-2 on the season with an 8-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Rams Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
At first singles, Dutchman Nathan Hansen won his match 6-3, 6-1 over John Carnovale.
At second singles, Brandon Romain of the Dutch defeated Mason Martonik 6-0, 6-0.
At third singles, Keith Meyer of the Dutch won his match 6-2, 6-1 over J.P. Allegretto.
Brandon Orr of the Dutch won his match 6-0, 6-1 over Shane Bickford at fourth singles.
At fifth singles, Michael Fox of the Dutch defeated Nate Fields 6-0, 6-0.

ECC students make St. Francis Pledge
