Reports have estimated that over 200,000 people from across the United States descended upon the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Oct. 30 to take part in comedians and television personalities Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbertâ€™s Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. The rally was a tongue-in-cheek event that did not endorse any candidates, but instead promoted moderation and cooperation among Americans of all backgrounds.
The 2010 elk hunt got underway Monday, with hunters harvesting a total of eight elk on the week-long hunt's opening day. Throughout the day, a sizable crowd of spectators gathered at the Game Commission's maintenance shed, located in the Black Moshannon State Forest along the Quehanna Highway in Karthaus, to view the elk as they were brought to the official check station.
Life, love and the pursuit of the elusive big buck are the themes of the comedy "Escanaba in da Moonlight," a comedy that will be presented by the Elk County Footlighters at the Diamond View Restaurant on Nov. 4, 5 and 6.
BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks edged the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch soccer team by a 4-3 score in overtime Monday night in a District 9-AA semifinal game played at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway.
The Chucks will now meet the Bradford Owls Thursday night at Clarion University for the District 9-AA title.
In last nightâ€™s semifinal game, the Chucks wasted little time, scoring with 38:57 left in the first half to take the 1-0 lead.
The two teams battled back and forth, with both having scoring opportunities, but neither were able to find the goal.
BROCKWAY - The Bradford Area Lady Owls scored three goals in 5:49 seconds in the second half of Monday evening's District 9-AA soccer playoff game at Brockway to defeat the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch, 3-0. The loss ended the season for the Lady Dutch, while the Bradford girls will take on the Clearfield girls on Wednesday night at Clarion for the District championship. Clearfield won over Ridgway by a 4-0 score for the right to meet Bradford for the District title.
Members of city council approved sending a letter to the Elk County Commissioners in support of the Downtown Restaurant Project during their meeting on Monday evening.
City manager Dave Greene explained that Matt Quesenberry, of the Elk County Planning Department, recently indicated that a developer has been in contact with him regarding bringing a restaurant to downtown St. Marys.
There have been increasing reports about bedbugs in cities like Pittsburgh, but these infestations are not only a problem for the city - local residents are now finding the little bloodsuckers in their homes.
â€śIt's not just a problem that's occurring in the cities or wherever you read,â€ť said Bill Milford, pest control technician for Southern Tier Professional Pest Control. â€śIt's happening here, too.â€ť
Bedbugs feed primarily on human blood, but will also feed on animals.
Rose Mary Dixon, 79, of 592 S. St. Marys St., St. Marys, died Friday evening, Oct. 29, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Janey Farish of York, following a brief illness.
She was born June 20, 1931, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Patrick and Genevieve Hanes Fleming.
On Oct. 9, 1954, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Robert T. Dixon, who preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2009.
Barbara A. Wantuck, 68, of 1280 Lockes Hill Rd., Wilcox, died early Saturday morning, Oct. 30, 2010, at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, following a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 31, 1941, in Lawton, OK, daughter of the late Richard T. and Betty Decker Benson.
On Sept. 1, 1962, in Honolulu, HI, she married William Thomas Wantuck, who survives.
RIDGWAY - The Elk County Catholic cross country teams successfully defended their District 9 Class AA championships by taking home the team titles at the 2010 District 9 meets held at Ridgwayâ€™s Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School on Boot Jack Road Saturday.
The Crusaders won the boysâ€™ title with a total of 63 points. They were followed by Oswayo Valley with 69, Cranberry 80, Northern Potter 86, Kane 144, North Clarion 147, Moniteau 217, Brockway 217, Clarion-Limestone 234, Brookville 236, AC Valley 277, DuBois Central 328, Smethport 368 and Port Allegany 387.
