SMASD continues addressing budget issues

August 11, 2011

Recently St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Ann Kearney updated the school board on budget issues.
This year, the district has absorbed six professional positions and combined other positions at a savings of over $500,000 to their current budget.
Additionally, positions absorbed in the past three years have helped with the budget crunch which other districts have been experiencing.

Elk County Fair kicks off

The 2011 Elk County Fair kicked off Wednesday evening with the Opening Ceremonies, which were attended by State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield), the Elk County Commissioners, various township supervisors and fair board personnel and volunteers.

Jo Ann K. Marche

Jo Ann K. Marche, 74, of 392 Brandy Camp Circle, Ridgway, died on August 5, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys.
She was born on March 18, 1937 in Dagus Mines, daughter of the late Adam and Sophie Zuchowski Shutika.
She married James A. Marche Sr., who died on July 6, 2008.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church in Brandy Camp and enjoyed crocheting, collecting angels and watching Mother Angelica on EWTN.
She had been employed at Stackpole Carbon as a laborer in the oven room for 18 years. After her retirement, she worked at Long John Silvers in DuBois and Sylvania in St. Marys.

Board seeking nurse agency

Elk County Prison Board members are looking for an area nursing agency to replace Helpmates Hospice in Ridgway,
"We haven't really utilized them and we felt that they would not be able to keep up with the changes that we've made to the Elk County prison system," said Elk County Prison Warden Gregory J. Gebauer. "I will go out into the community and check with some of the other nursing agencies to see if we can get them on here as a backup provider."

CAMCO completes expansion, offers new service

Following an expansion project that took almost two years and cost more than $500,000, CAMCO Diversified, Inc., in St. Marys is offering a new service with the addition of two new large-batch steam treaters.

Supervisors approve business items

At a recent Fox Township Supervisors meeting, bids were reviewed for fencing at Fox Township Community Park. The winning bid was submitted by Kessler Fencing in DuBois at a cost of $12,395.51.
The second bid was submitted by C&H Fencing of Worthville for $12,680. The supervisors approved the lowest bid pending approval of the township's park director, Deb Agosti.

School board votes to keep gymnastics program

Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors voted unanimously to continue the school's varsity gymnastics program for the 2011-12 school year during Monday evening's school board meeting.
The board imposed two provisions in maintaining the program: The first is that the Central Pennsylvania Gymnastics League maintain their current membership and the second is that the St. Marys team maintain a minimum number of eight participants. Continuing the program will be considered on a year-to-year basis.

Summer is a busy time for area schools, including St. Marys Area School District, which is in the process of carrying out several repairs and renovations.

Council still debating on how to proceed with drilling ordinance

Late last week, members of city council continued their discussion regarding having a lawyer familiar with drilling regulations examine their draft of proposed changes to the city's zoning ordinance regarding oil and gas drilling.
City Manager Dave Greene informed council that he had received an engagement letter from attorney Robert Ging Jr.

Raymond H. Gradl

Raymond H. Gradl, 78, of 460 Maple Street, St. Marys, died with his family by his side on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011 at DuBois Regional Medical Center following a short illness. 
He was born May 13, 1933 in St. Marys, a son of the late Alfred and Marie Leuschel Gradl.
On July 2, 1960 in Queen of the World Church, he married Barbara Wagner Gradl, who survives.
Mr. Gradl was a member of Queen of the World Church. He graduated from Central High School, Class of 1953.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Bryant Stratton College in Buffalo.
