Updates presented at recent East Branch meeting

Representatives from several area state and local parks presented updates on their facilities and programs on Wednesday morning during the East Branch Clarion River Lake's spring public meeting.
Topics focused on activities and issues which have occurred since the lake's fall 2010 meeting. In addition, a dam safety initiative currently being undertaken at the lake followed the partnership reports.
Jeanne Wambaugh of Elk State Forest said the park has a new ranger, Tillman Smith, as well as a new oil and gas forester who arrived in October.

Lady Dutch lead Lady Beavers 5-2 in suspended game

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch game with the DuBois Area Lady Beavers was called due to weather conditions after two and a half innings. The Lady Dutch are leading in the game by a 5-2 score.
They had seven hits in the first two innings, with Mandy Gerarge and Kali Quagliani leading the way with two singles each. Rachel Ginther, Savanah Krivonyak and Raelyn Cunningham each had a single to account for the other three hits. Gerarge has three RBIs in the game thus far, while Krivonyak and Cunningham each have one.

Lady Crusaders use strong hitting in 21-2 win over Ridgway

Elk County Catholic pounded the softball and had a 13-run second inning en route to a 21-2, 3-inning win over Ridgway Wednesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
ECC had every starter get a hit, the top four hitters combined for nine hits overall.

Crusader baseball leads Elkers 10-1 in suspended game

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders and the Ridgway Elkers saw their game Wednesday suspended after 2 1/2 innings due to inclement weather.
The Crusaders were leading by a 10-1 score when the game was called in the top of the third inning after Ridgway finished batting.
The Crusaders had five hits in the limited contest. Kyle Schneider had a double while Ricky Pearsall, Eric Wehler, Luke Daghir and Josh Feldbauer all singled.
Jesse Reynolds, Josh Mitchell and Slade Horner all singled for the Elkers.

Recycling center approaches half-ton mark

The Elk County Community Recycling Center is rapidly approaching the half-ton mark for No. 5 plastics.
"We have about another dozen boxes of No. 5 plastic to ship," said Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordiantor Bekki Titchner during Tuesday night's Solid Waste Authority meeting. "We have a whole mountain to take to the post office again.
"We are approaching 1,000 pounds of the stuff. It's pretty amazing."

Women Who Care hosting rummage sale

Members of the local Women Who Care, a giving circle organization, are diligently working on last-minute details of the group's first Spring Rummage Sale planned for Friday and Saturday.
The event will take place inside the Franklin Center, located in downtown St. Marys. The sale begins at 8 a.m. each day and concludes at 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
"There will be lots of good stuff that everybody needs," said event co-chair Connie Amendola.
All proceeds from the sale will benefit Women Who Care grants and the endowment fund.

Recipients of Eagle Scout Award

ST. MARYS - Recently, four members of Boy Scout Troop 95, sponsored by the Sacred Heart Church, were awarded the Eagle Scout badge, scouting’s highest rank. The boys who
received the Eagle award are: Benjamin Daghir, Luke Daghir, Samuel Schneider, and Jared Schaut.
Ben is the son of Joseph and Roben Daghir. He is a senior at Elk County Catholic High School, where he has been a member of the baseball, basketball, and football teams. He is also a member of the Outdoor Club and Campus Ministry.

Wolfel competent to stand trial for arson

RIDGWAY – Earlier this month Elk County President Judge Richard A. Masson handed down a ruling that Philip Bradley Wolfel, 22, of 5448 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, is competent to stand trial on charges related to his allegedly setting fire to a residence located at 204 Depot St., Ridgway, on Aug. 12, 2010.

Tami honored at Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The late William David Tami Jr. of St. Marys was honored last week during the 13th annual In Memory Day ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Trout Unlimited assists with monitoring project

The Elk County Conservation District is teaming up with the Pa. Council of Trout Unlimited to assist with the Elk County Monitoring Project [ECMP].
The ECMP was initiated to keep an eye on the water quality in Elk County.
"I have been working with Trout Unlimited pretty closely because they're training their people to sample for TDS [Total Dissolved Solids] and things like that for the Marcellus watch," said Elk County Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine. "I am teaming up with Trout Unlimited in that effort."
