Lee Joseph Cook

February 28, 2011

Lee Joseph Cook, 57, of 914 Windfall Rd., St. Marys, formerly of Emporium, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2011, at his residence.
He was born June 22, 1953 in St. Marys, son of Bessie Priest Cook of Emporium, and the late Lee C. Cook.
He graduated from Cameron County High School, Class of 1973. He resided at Oak Manor in St. Marys for 37 years and worked at Elcam for over 37 years. He enjoyed his family, Christmas, his dogs, Elvis Presley and collecting Elvis memorabilia, mowing grass and fishing. He enjoyed playing lottery tickets and often won.

Dutch wrestlers capture three D9 individual championships

CLARION - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers captured three individual District 9 Class AAA championships Saturday night at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
Michael Brennen at 160 pounds, Joe McLaughlin at 189 pounds and Kevin Hoy at 285 pounds, won their respective weight class titles and advance to this weekend’s Northwest Regional Tournament set for the Altoona Area High School Field House.

Crusaders rally to defeat Falcons 55-52 in overtime

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the semifinals of the District 9-A Tournament with a thrilling 55-52 victory over the Coudersport Falcons on Saturday night at the Aaron J. Straub Gym at Elk Catholic.
The Crusaders tied the game at 47-all on a Tyler Herzing trey with 17 seconds left in regulation. The Elk County defense then prevented the Falcons from getting a good shot off, thus forcing the game into overtime. In the overtime period the Crusaders outscored the Falcons 8-5 (six by Pearsall and two by Simons) to lock up the win and advance on in the playoffs.

Dutch swimmers 2nd, Lady Dutch 3rd at D9 League meet

The St. Marys Area swimming teams placed second (Dutchmen) and third (Lady Dutch) at the 2011 District Nine League Swimming and Diving championships held at the St. Marys Area High Natatorium on Friday and Saturday.

Betty J. Marchiori

Betty J. Marchiori, 84, of Hoovertown Road, Penfield, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011 at the DuBois Nursing Home after a brief illness.
She was born May 9, 1926 in Penfield, daughter of the late Jim and Annie (Marsh) Soliday.
She was married to Robert Kearney, who preceded her in death in 1948. On Oct. 5, 1949, she married Frank J. "Fritz" Marchiori, who preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 2009.

Confirmation classes donate to local organizations

On Sunday afternoon, members of this year's Confirmation class presented Betsy Roberts, treasurer of the St. Marys Christian Food Bank, with a check for over $5,500 that they raised for the organization through their "Souper Bowl" collection at area churches on Super Bowl Sunday. The students collected donations following that weekend's Masses at all three Catholic churches in St. Marys, as well as at the chapel at Elk County Catholic High School following a Saturday evening service.

Discovery blasts into space for final mission

Former St. Marys resident Jenn Steele, along with numerous relatives including cousins Margie and Nick Fritz, Sara and Ray Shaffer and Christa Fritz-Gainar, all of St. Marys, were among those who witnessed the recent NASA Discovery space shuttle launch on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 at 4:53 p.m. The pristine weather provided for ideal viewing of the launch along central Florida's space coast, home to Kennedy Space Center. The Expedition 26 crew's 11-day mission includes two spacewalks in order to conduct maintenance work and install new components.

Dunham's Sports holds grand opening

The winter weather impacting the area Friday morning failed to deter residents from venturing to Dunham's Sports, which officially opened for business following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. The business is located along S. St. Marys Street in the storefront formerly occupied by St. Marys Chevrolet.
Dunham's offers a variety of recreational equipment, including athletic apparel, footwear, general athletics items, and hunting items.

McLain creates unique yet functional wood carvings

Chainsaw Carver Brett McLain, 34, of Fredon, N.J., not only creates unique wood carvings but works to promote other carvers' work as part of his business, Freehand Custom Carving, which he established six years ago.
"We host carvers from all over the country and all over the world at our shop," McLain said. "We are continuing to create a budget to push the envelope of standard chainsaw carvings."
McLain is a veteran of the annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous, having participated in the "vous" in the last 11 of its 12 years.

David A. (Zeke) Defranco, 58, of 341 Grant Street, St. Marys, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 at the Canonsburg Hospital Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 7, 1952, in St. Marys, son of Fred and Monica Bauer Defranco, who survive.
On Nov. 16, 1973, in St. Marys, he married Cherre L. Conklin, who survives.
