CLARION - The Elk County Catholic Crusaders basketball season came to a close on Tuesday night as they were defeated by the District 7-2 Lincoln Park Charter School by a 66-47 score in the second round of the PIAA State Class A Playoffs held at Clarion University.
Kim Bonfardine of the county's Conservation District reported Tuesday morning that county officials have acquired over $200,000 worth of grant money for water testing.
"The project's purpose is to set up and get data on the industries that are moving into the area," Bonfardine said. "We won't just be monitoring for Marcellus Shale but also other things as well. We're very lucky to get a lot of partners for their support.
Vollmer enters into Pretrial Intervention/Deferred Prosecution Agreement
LEE COUNTY, Fla. â€“Â According to information obtained from the Lee County Sheriff's Office, John Joseph Vollmer, 64, of St. Marys, was recently entered into a Pretrial Intervention/Deferred Prosecution Agreement in relation to charges of soliciting another for lewdness assignation, first offense, which were filed against him on Feb. 24.
The Guidance Center in DuBois has been affiliated with the national Big Brothers Big Sisters organization since 1990, with the program having been in place in Elk County since 2001.
One successful match, who have been together for eight or nine years, are Mary Meyer of St. Marys and Molly Zemla of Kersey. Mary is employed through the Advancement Office of the Elk County Catholic School System (ECCSS), while Molly is currently a junior at St. Marys Area High School.
The St. Marys Area School Board of Directors approved a list of items during their regular meeting held Monday evening. Among them was a resolution opposing Senate Bill 1, which would implement a tuition voucher program within the Commonwealth. The board voted unanimously to approve the resolution opposing the bill.
Mary "Louise" Coccimiglio, 97, of Pine Avenue, Force, died early Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at home following a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 22, 1914 in Brockway, daughter of the late Benjamine and Rosina (Porco) Caruso.
She married Anthony Francis Coccimiglio, who preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1979.
She was born and raised in Brockway, and lived for the past 78 years in Force. She was a graduate of Snyder Township High School. She was a homemaker, wife, and mother and for 10 years ran a general store in Weedville.
Maurice Falcettoni, 98, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and a former resident of Dagus Mines, died Monday, March 14 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
He was born July 26, 1912 in Dagus Mines, son of the late Alexander (Alex) and Lena Gornati Falcettoni.
He was a lifelong resident of Dagus Mines and attended Kersey schools. He was the owner of a store in Dagus Mines and also worked as a coal miner.
Darcy S. Schneider, 54, of 150 First Ave. Apt. B, Johnsonburg, died on Monday, March 14, 2011 at Shadyside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
She was born on Sept. 23, 1956 in St. Marys, the daughter of the late Edward and Ann Shannon Robuck.
She resided in Johnsonburg all her life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1976.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, American Legion Post 501 in Johnsonburg and the Johnsonburg Moose. She loved animals and rooting for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Doris M. Tahara, 86, of 225 Parade Street, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh following an illness of the past few days.
She was born September 3, 1924 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Arthur "Stub" and Bertha Tyler Fritz.
On May 25, 1946 in Cresco, she married the late Dr. Charles T. Tahara, who was a noted urologist in the area. He preceded her in death on November 23, 1966.
William R. Penfield Sr., 87, formerly of Ridgway and Kane, died Monday morning, March 14, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Brockway, son of the late William J. and Dorothy (Woods) Penfield.
He married Erma Jean Griffith on Jan. 19, 1946. She preceded him in death on May 17, 1974.
