William A. Schena

June 2, 2011

William A. Schena, 72, of Cowley Hill Rd., Austin, died suddenly Monday, May 30, 2011 at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center of Altoona.
He was born Aug. 27, 1938, in Weedville, son of the late Andrew "Godfrey" and Angelina (Martioni) Schena.

George R. DiNardo

George R. DiNardo, 88, formerly of 707 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Sunday at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 13, 1923, in Johnsonburg, son of the late Raphael and Serifina (Marrone) DiNardo.
He married Margaret (Mitzie) V. Geci on Nov. 28, 1946 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Marys. She preceded him in death on June 2, 1970.

Kathryn E. Fustine

Kathryn E. Fustine, 85, of 1144 Alexander St., Brockway, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Highland View Health Care Center in Brockway.
She was born July 12, 1925 in Brockway, the daughter of the late Henry and Minnie Patterson Mooney. On March 5, 1946, at St. Tobias Church in Brockway, she married Henry A. Fustine, who survives.

Edna L. Erich Kastner

Edna L. Erich Kastner, 84, of 108 Irishtown Rd., Kersey, died Monday, May 30, 2011, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born June 14, 1926, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Benninger Erich.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1944. She had worked as an assistant cook at the St. Boniface School and had volunteered at the school.
On Nov. 15, 1947, in the St. Mary's Church, she married Donald Kastner, who preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1973.

Elk County Catholic graduates 86 seniors

Sunday's sunny skies and warm weather presented a picturesque backdrop for the 86 members of Elk County Catholic High School's senior class as they celebrated their graduation.
A large crowd of parents, families and friends gathered at the school for a morning Baccalaureate Mass and brunch, followed by the traditional graduation ceremony, which began at 12:30 p.m.
Prior to the start of the ceremony, Elk Catholic Headmaster John Kowach welcomed all in attendance during a brief address.

Elk Catholic’s Megan Dornisch defends shot put title

Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch successfully defended her PIAA Class AA shot put championship on Saturday by winning the 2011 crown.
The PIAA track and field championships were held Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
Megan won the 2011 event with a throw of 44’8”. Aubree Ray of Middletown took second with a throw of 40’1.25”. Dornisch won her 2010 shot put title with a throw of 45’8.25”.

Lt. Col. Kuntz reflects on past Memorial Day celebrations

St. Marys native Lt. Col. Daniel F. Kuntz, U.S. Army, served as the Honorary Grand Marshal for this year's Memorial Day celebration, taking part in the annual parade and addressing attendees during the Memorial Day program.
As he began his remarks at Memorial Park in front of a large crowd, he noted that it was both a beautiful day and "great to be back in St. Marys once again."

Masson: Planned Bucktail memorial a fitting tribute

MT. ZION – The Honorable Richard Masson, 59th Judicial District Judge, took part in the fifth annual Memorial Day Dedication at Mt. Zion Historic Park on Saturday afternoon, addressing the large crowd gathered about the plans currently under way for a Civil War memorial for the Elk County chapter of the Bucktails.
Masson began by commenting on the Historic Park in general, referring to it as a “wonderful facility.”

Veterans honored at graveside services

The annual graveside services to honor war veterans were held once again on Monday morning in both the St. Mary's Catholic and Protestant cemeteries. This year's services were held at the graves of World War II veteran William Herbstritt in the Catholic cemetery and Korean War veteran Larry Bucher Jr. in the Protestant cemetery. The ceremonies were conducted by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1047.

Chester H. Huth, D.D.S.

Chester H. Huth D.D.S., 94, of 400 N. Michael St., St. Marys, died Saturday evening, May 28, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Gardenville, N.Y., son of the late William A. and Helen Pletscher Huth. On Jan. 29, 1946, in Pittsburgh, he married Marie Jean Schmitt, who survives.
He was a resident of St. Marys since 1962. He attended elementary school in Gardenville, N.Y., and graduated from high school in Buffalo, N.Y. He was also a 1944 graduate of the University of Buffalo School of Dentistry.
