Helen A. Bilodeau

Helen A. Bilodeau, 77, of 124 David St., Kersey, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 19, 1933 in Coal Hollow, daughter of the late John and Elvira Lavella Glance.
On June 28, 1952 in the St. Boniface Church, she married Dolph L. Bilodeau, who survives.

Arthur J. "Spider" Krieg

Arthur J. "Spider Krieg, 85, of 216 Martin Rd., St. Marys, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010 at the Elk Haven Nursing home after a brief illness.
He was born March 10, 1925 in St. Marys, son of the late Lawrence and Gertrude Gerber Krieg. On July 17, 1948, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Mercedes A. Shields, who preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2004.
Mr. Krieg was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Corp., retiring in 1987 after 25 years of service.

Lady Dutch improve to 6-0, beat DCCHS 70-41

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch remained perfect on the young season with a 70-41 victory over the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch opened a 24-6 lead after the first eight minutes of play and never looked back. They placed three players in double figures, led by Kayla Hoohuli’s 5 points on three twos, two threes and a three-for-three night from the foul line. Adair Gennocro added 13 points on five twos and a three. Jenna Anderson scored 11 points on four twos and a three, while Shelby Zomcik added nine points.

Lady Crusaders drop 49-43 game to DuBois Lady Beavers

The DuBois Area Lady Beavers overcame a 10-point, third-quarter lead by the Elk Catholic Lady Crusaders on Wednesday evening to pull out a 49-43 victory in a District Nine League game at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the Elk Catholic campus.
The loss dropped the Elk County girls to 3-2 on the season, while DuBois Area ran their slate to 4-1 on the season.

VFW donates Taser to sheriff's office

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5887 presented a check to the Elk County Sheriff's Office for the purchase of a Taser gun.
The $900 check was presented by VFW 5887 Post Commander Ricky Hicks to Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey Krieg and deputies Patrick Straub and William Gerg Jr.
“It is a less-than-lethal weapon that we like to use for trouble in a courtroom and things like that,” said Krieg. “By using it, we don't incur the liability like you do when you have to shoot somebody.
“It's mainly for my deputies to use in those situations and this will give us two now for the department.”

Big Buck Contest winner

Joe Dellaquila, 32, of Ridgway, was announced as the winner of the 6th annual Big Buck Contest during Wednesday night's contest wrap-up festivities at the Johnsonburg Fire Hall. Dellaquila bagged a 14-point, 180-lb. buck during archery season. A special Big Buck edition will appear in the Tuesday, Dec. 28 issue of The Daily Press, The Ridgway Record and The Kane Republican. Above, Dellaquila is shown with some of the $5,000 in prizes he won as part of the contest.

Fullington bus service resumes in St. Marys

Fullington Bus Service has recently returned to St. Marys after being discontinued for a year.
"The bus went through St. Marys for more than 20 years," said Milt Wiseman, vice-president for Intercity Coach Services. "There was minimal ridership so we tried service through Brockway and Ridgway. Unfortunately, this ridership was very minimal also, so we are trying St. Marys again."

Supervisors plan to be more thorough regarding drilling

At their recent meeting, Jay Township supervisor Francis Gustafson explained that he and his fellow supervisors plan to take a more thorough approach to Marcellus gas drilling within the township, particularly with regard to what sort of hazardous materials are being used.

Coudersport uses foul line to beat Dutch 59-51

The Coudersport Falcons used a 14-for-14 effort from the foul line in the fourth quarter to defeat the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 59-51 score last night at the Dutch Oven.
St. Marys held a slim 40-38 lead going into the final eight minutes of play. In the fourth quarter, the Falcons outscored the Dutch by a 21-11 margin to come out on top.
“We struggled from the foul line tonight but it was our inability to stop their penetration. They were able to penetrate too easily,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.

DuBois Beavers nip Elk Catholic Crusaders 66-65

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders suffered their second setback of the season on Tuesday evening, when they were nipped 66-65 by the DuBois Area High Beavers in a District Nine League encounter played at the DuBois gym.
The loss dropped the Crusaders to 2-2 on the season.
