Recent disasters severely impact Red Cross budget

The Elk-Cameron Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross has reported its operating budget has been severely impacted by recent disasters which have occurred throughout the area.
According to Elk-Cameron Chapter Program Director Patti Micale, the local organization spent more on disaster relief in November than all of last year.
This allotment consists of $5,000 of their budget, which was used to aid residents impacted by widespread flooding in early December, as well as from house fires in Kersey and Ridgway.

$766 raised for Coaches vs. Cancer

While large crowds of area residents turned out to watch the action during last week's Elk County Holiday Tournament, many also took the time to contribute to the effort to raise money for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
According to Roben Daghir, American Cancer Society outreach volunteer, a total of $766 was raised throughout the tournament. All of the money will go to the American Cancer Society and will benefit individuals within the county.

Lady Dutch win fourth consecutive county title

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team captured their fourth consecutive Elk County Girls’ Holiday Basketball Tournament championship last night with a 52-36 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders in the title game at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
After a close first half which saw the score tied at 20 following the first 16 minutes, the Lady Dutch went on a 12-2 run in the first four minutes of the second half to open a 10-point lead. The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Crusaders 32-16 in the second half.

Elk County Catholic Crusaders win tourney title

ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic won the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 58-43 victory over Ridgway Thursday night at St. Marys Area High School.
This is the 22nd time Elk County Catholic has won the boys' county tournament, now in its 31st year.
"This year it was a wide open tournament," Elk County Catholic Aaron J. Straub said. "You take a look at the records, it was anybody's tournament to win. Fortunately, among some other things, we made some shots and we were successful."

Flying Dutch finish third in Holiday Tourney

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen snapped a two game losing streak as they defeated the Johnsonburg Area High Rams by 46-34 score in the consolation game of the Elk County Boys' Holiday Basketball Tournament held at the "Dutch Oven".
"I felt we rebounded well from last night's (Wednesday) loss to Elk Catholic," said Mark Guido, St. Marys Area Head Coach. "We played with composure, especially during the final period."

Ramettes cruise to consolation win over Ridgway

ST. MARYS – Johnsonburg (4-4) jumped out to an early 13-0 lead Thursday afternoon in the consolation game of the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament and cruised to a lopsided 41-14 win over Ridgway (0-8).
Johnsonburg senior Justis Myers paced all scorers with 15 points on the day while outscoring the Lady Elkers. Myers finished the 2010 county tournament with 27 points.
One day removed from a 65-36 loss to eventual county champion St. Marys (8-0), the Lady Elkers did not break through the double-digit barrier until the final minutes of Thursday's game.

Seasonal light displays brighten holidays

Kersey residents Justin Peiffer and David Slother have gotten used to people parking in their driveway as they take in their elaborate Christmas light display.
The Ruffner Lane residence is situated on state Route 948, making it an ideal location to showcase the 300- piece menagerie, featuring a variety of scenes including a choir, Disney characters, a Santa Claus train, numerous versions of Santa and Mrs. Claus, a CandyLand section, a reindeer sleigh,a garland archway in the driveway and an Arctic-themed display in the side yard.

Lucille A. Boyer Davido

Lucille A. Boyer Davido, 88, of 8 Short St., Ridgway, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Aug. 11, 1922, in DuBois, the daughter of Frank and Mary Brown Boyer.
She married Donald A. Davido Sr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1982.
Mrs. Davido had resided in Ridgway for 63 years. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She had been employed at Quality Components, where she retired after 24 years of service.

Julia Berneche

Julia Karlechuck Berneche of Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010 in Collingwood Nursing Home.
She married George Berneche, who died in 1993.

Larry M. Stark

December 30, 2010

Larry M. Stark, 75, of Grant Road, Ridgway, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 19, 1935 in Ridgway, the son of the late Melvin and Louise Balmer Stark.
On July 21, 1956, he married Virginia M. (Ginger) Boults of Johnsonburg, who survives.
