Area students return to school

Today marks the first day of school for area students. Many were greeted this morning by brightly and colorful classrooms, such as those of Mrs. Krug, a kindergarten teacher at South St. Marys Street Elementary School, shown at left, and Mrs. Kuntz, a kindergarten teacher at St. Marys Catholic Elementary School, at right.

Elk County Fair annual talent show

A sizable crowd was on hand at the Elk County Fair's annual talent show. Performers from age 6 to 26 entertained the audience with singing, dancing and musical abilities. Prizes were awarded for first-, second- and third-place finishes in three age divisions: 9 and under, 10–15 years and 16 years and over.

Larry D. Simon of Ridgway has photographed a robin's nest from the time the eggs are laid all the way through the fledglings leaving the nest, but says this is the first time he has ever seen an expectant robin. According to Larry, robins have two broods a year, and the bird above appears to be expecting quintuplets.

Wing fling proves to be a delicious evening

The 11th Annual Wing Fling, sponsored by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, was held Friday evening in downtown St. Marys. Patrons enjoyed wings from several area establishments and judged which were the tastiest. There was no word on the winner as of press time.

Charles Street home damaged by fire

Members of the Crystal Fire Department were called out Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for a reported structure fire at 330 Charles St.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the first floor fully involved in fire. Firefighters established a water supply and knocked the fire down. They spent a considerable amount of time working on hot spots.
There was heavy fire, heat and smoke damage to the first floor, moderate heat and smoke damage to the second floor and moderate smoke damage to the basement.
There were no injuries.
The cause of the fire was attributed to unattended cooking.
