Large turnout for cancer study

Over 100 area residents volunteered for the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study, the third-ever of its kind conducted nationwide. The study was held inside the Sacred Heart Parish Center in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12. In order to be eligible to participate in the study, volunteers needed to be between 30 and 65 years old, had never been diagnosed with cancer and be willing to make a commitment to participate in a 20-year study by completing periodic follow-up surveys at home.

Maternity Closet Receives Donations

Carleen Koch, Director of The Maternity Closet, is shown receiving a check from Peg Hayes, Co-Director of the Vacation Bible School held this summer at the Shiloh Presbyterian Church. In addition to the check, the children donated infant clothing and disposable diapers. The Maternity Closet is open to parents of babies and young children to the age of 3, the first three Thursdays of the month from 1-2:30. Contributions may be mailed to the Maternity Closet at P.O. Box 215, St. Marys, PA 15857. The Maternity Closet is located at the St. Joseph Monastery.

Don't Stop Believing

A crowd of 97,186 were in attendance at Beaver Stadium on Saturday for Penn State's home opener versus Ohio University. Although the Bobcats defeated the Nittany Lions 24-14, a majority of the crowd stayed until the end of the game. During half-time the Blue Band performed music from "Rocky". The band formed an 'S' formation and dedicated Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" to the students. Band members also unfurled a "One Team" banner, a new mantra adopted by the university.

Bennetts Valley holds 61st Annual Labor Day Homecoming Celebration

The 61st annual Labor Day Homecoming Celebration was held on Sept. 2 and 3 in Bennetts Valley. Pictured above, a carousel, castle-themed bounce house, and mini-train were some of the attractions for youngsters at this year's celebration. ECCSS Family Picnic 2012

The Elk County Catholic School System hosted its annual Family Picnic and bonfire Thursday evening on the grounds of Elk County Catholic High School. Visitors gathered at the school's track, where fall sport participants were announced by team coaches. The Crusader Marching Band and cheerleaders also performed. Meet the Dutch

St. Marys Area High School hosted its annual Meet the Dutch event on Wednesday evening at Dutch Country Stadium. Prior to the event, a balloon release was held in memory of sophomore Taylor Schutz, 15, who died earlier this month as a result of an ATV accident. Schutz was a member of the girls' volleyball team. Her younger sister, Ashlynn, was introduced with the team as their new ball girl. The Dutchmen Marching Band performed a piece from their upcoming halftime show, which was followed by performances from the junior high, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders.
