Artists unleashed at ECCOTA's annual gala

Attendees watch the artistic process unfold during the Dueling Artists event at the Elk County Council on the Arts's annual gala fundraiser held Saturday evening at Aiello's in Ridgway. The artists were Dan Bjorkquist, Abbi Peters, Grover Slater and Peter Winklbauer, each utilizing different mediums in their creations. The unique format consisted of a 30-minute time period during which the artists completed their version of a still-life flower arrangement displayed nearby. Each piece was auctioned off, with Winklbauer's creation bringing in the highest bid.

Dueling piano musicians entertain guests at the annual Elk County Council on the Arts gala held Saturday. During the event the duo performed a wide variety of songs ranging from pop, 70s, rock and much more. The musicians interacted with the crowd by taking song requests and donning numerous costumes as part of their performance. Audience members were also called upon to participate in whimsical acts.

Polar Bear Plunge at Medix

Yes, yes they did-- this crazy crew took the Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday afternoon by the Medix Hotel. A large crowd gathered to watch the brave, bold-- and cold-- group who enjoyed the balmy 32-degree weather.

Ugly Sweaters raise funds for United Way

Recently, the staff at Phoenix Physical Therapy held a fundraiser for the 2013 United Way campaign called "Ugly Sweater Day to Benefit the United Way." With her outrageous outfit, Katie Baumgratz won the event with the most money raised. ECCSS receives scholarship grants

The Elk County Catholic School System recently received scholarship grants made possible by local businesses participating in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.
The tuition assistance grants were awarded through the STAR Foundation, a non-profit scholarship organization established by the Diocese of Erie, which works in partnership with the state’s EITC program.

GKN donates to Community Nurses, Inc.

GKN Sinter Metals-Emporium presented the Community Nurses with a $2,000 donation from their GKN Foundation in support of the many services and  programs the home care agency provides in area communities. Community Nurses is a non-profit agency that provides home health, hospice, home support and adult day services to the residents of Cameron, Elk and McKean Counties and parts of Clearfield, Jefferson and Potter Counties.

The Dynamic Dance Competition Company of April School of Dance in St. Marys is excited to begin their competition season this weekend. The team, directed by Jennifer Blankenship, will travel to Pittsburgh to attend Dancemakers, Inc. where they will spend the weekend taking class with dance professionals from Los Angeles and will compete their eight group dances, two duets, and nine solos they have been working on since September. DDCC is made up of 19 dancers from Wilcox, Ridgway, Kersey, and St. Marys. They range from 10 to 18 years of age.

Coaches vs. Cancer nets more than $800 at Holiday Tournament
