Shown are Katie (on left) and Suzanne Friedl (on right), along with their Grandpa Bob Buehler, in a photo that was taken in 1991 or 1992 in Ridgway as the family was on their way to the Ellicottville Rodeo. According to Fritz Lecker, who took the photo, it was a beautiful, very hot summer day. Katie and Suzanne both had their cowboy hats on, as the entire family loved the rodeo and was raring to go. Suzanne was clutching her teddy because she had a stomachache, but insisted she was well enough to make the trip.

Relay for Life team, local salon owners working to 'Nail the Cure'

Accentz Salon is teaming up with the St. Marys Pharmacy's Relay For Life Team and the American Cancer Society. “NAIL THE CURE” is a tribute to their family, friends, and clients whose lives have been affected by cancer. Salon owners Cookie Wittman and Shelley Schaut are gladly donating 10 percent from the proceeds of every manicure and pedicure during the entire month of June in support of the American Cancer Society. Also during the Relay For Life on June 10 and 11, Cookie and Shelley will be onsite with the St.

Stahli receives nursing scholarship

Laura Stahli was recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the St. Marys Nurses Study Club. The award was presented on May 18, 2011 at the club's dinner meeting, held at The Red Fern. Laura is the daughter of Debra Stahli of Johnsonburg. She attended Johnsonburg Area High School and plans to attend Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, where she will pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing.

Middle schools celebrate eighth grade graduation

On Thursday evening, local eighth grade students celebrated the conclusion of their middle school education as their families and friends gathered during separate ceremonies. Approximately 155 St. Marys Area Middle School students participated in the annual matriculation ceremony held at St. Marys Area High School. Across town, 67 St. Marys Catholic Middle School students celebrated their graduation during a Mass held at St. Mary's Church, followed by an awards ceremony. Photo by Amy Cherry.
