'Picnic on the Porch' celebrates Older Americans Month

Memorial crosses pay tribute to veterans

Earlier this week, the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail placed 93 memorial wooden crosses on the side lawn of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in memory of local veterans who died in one of the nation's wars.
An annual event, the crosses were placed on the hillside just below the church. Each bears the name of a community member who lost his life in wartime.

Memorial Day plans finalized

The Memorial Day Committee has announced completed plans for the annual observance of Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2011.
The day's activities will begin at 8 a.m. with graveside services by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1047 in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at the gravesite of World War II Veteran William Herbstritt. Similar services will be conducted at the gravesite of Korean War Veteran Larry Bucher Jr. in the Presbyterian Cemetery on Washington Street. The public is invited and urged to attend these impressive ceremonies, which emulate the true meaning of Memorial Day.

SSMES Olympic flagbearers

South St. Marys Street Elementary School kicked off their Eighth Annual Olympic Games on Monday morning at Dutch Country Stadium. During the opening Parade of Nations, each class, representing different countries, marched around the track of Dutch Country Stadium. Each student wore handmade-designed T-shirts. Following the parade, each class performed a song.

American Legion donates to Food Bank

The American Legion in St. Marys recently donated $2,000 dollars to the Christian Food Bank in St. Marys. This is the third donation to the food bank from the American Legion this year.
"It's a very nice check," said Food Bank President Billie Diehl."We're very grateful for it."

Middle schoolers enjoy airport visit

Students at the St. Marys Area Middle School are shown waiting in line for their chance to sit in one of the planes that belongs to the Elk Flyers Club at the St. Marys Airport. Students toured the St. Marys Airport on Wednesday, receiving tours of the facility from Elk Flyers Club member Jerry Bonfardine. While both tours began at Cloud 9 Aerosports, Inc., which is owned by Bob and Lori Keech, the morning group also had the chance to meet Paul Malone, who owns his own plane and keeps it in a rented hangar at the airport.
