Laura Stahli was recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the St. Marys Nurses Study Club. The award was presented on May 18, 2011 at the club's dinner meeting, held at The Red Fern. Laura is the daughter of Debra Stahli of Johnsonburg. She attended Johnsonburg Area High School and plans to attend Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, where she will pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing.
On Thursday evening, local eighth grade students celebrated the conclusion of their middle school education as their families and friends gathered during separate ceremonies. Construction of the St. Marys Community Medical Building continues, with the shell of what will be a 22,550-square-foot, three-story building now visible against the skyline at its site on the Million Dollar Highway in Fox Township between CNB bank and Wal-Mart. When completed, the facility, a branch of DuBois Regional Medical Center, will provide a number of general and specialized healthcare services to residents of Elk, Cameron and McKean counties. Earlier this week, the St. Marys Servicemenâ€™s Burial Detail placed 93 memorial wooden crosses on the side lawn of the St. Maryâ€™s Catholic Church in memory of local veterans who died in one of the nation's wars.
An annual event, the crosses were placed on the hillside just below the church. Each bears the name of a community member who lost his life in wartime.
The Memorial Day Committee has announced completed plans for the annual observance of Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2011.
The day's activities will begin at 8 a.m. with graveside services by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1047 in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at the gravesite of World War II Veteran William Herbstritt. Similar services will be conducted at the gravesite of Korean War Veteran Larry Bucher Jr. in the Presbyterian Cemetery on Washington Street. The public is invited and urged to attend these impressive ceremonies, which emulate the true meaning of Memorial Day.
