Elk Regional Health Center welcomes New Year’s Baby

Little baby boy Colton Michael Koch was born at 2:02 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2014, delivered by his dad, Dr. Steven Koch. No, not at home or in a car, he was, in fact born and delivered at Elk Regional Health Center. After waiting for 40 weeks and three long days, his proud parents, Dr. and Mrs. Steven and Jessica Koch, were happy to have a healthy baby, weighing 8 pounds, 1.8 ounces and 21.5 inches long. ERHC nurses who helped deliver Colton were Lisa Hanes, RN and Laura Lorenzo, RN. The family met with ERHC Maternity staff to allow staff to give the Koch family gifts from the St.

Women Who Care seeking new members

The Women Who Care Steering Committee once again had a Donor Advisor for a Day “membership drive” for the 2013-14 membership year.
“This year we had an additional $400 in granting money available,” said Paula Fritz Eddy, committee member.
Women Who Care (WWC) is a local group created as a project of the Elk County Community Foundation. WWC is dedicated to addressing the needs of women and families throughout Elk County.

Fox Twp. students raise money for JDRF

JDRF is a nonprofit organization that raises money to research cures for juvenile diabetes. Fox Township Elementary School raised money by selling paper shoes for a dollar that the kids put their names on. The class that raised the most money with the shoes sprayed silly string on their teacher. All of the shoes were put in the school’s lobby. Mrs. Kaveney’s class raised the most money. The kindergarteners had fun spraying the silly string on their teacher, Mrs. Kaveney. The school also put a large black tub in front of the school’s main office. The students brought in candy to fill the tub.

Herbstritt completes Eagle Scout project

This past summer, Benjamin Herbstritt, his fellow scouts and some friends completed a raised garden for the residents of Elk Haven Nursing Home. Ben is a member of Boy Scout Troop 95, which is sponsored by the Sacred Heart Parish. As an Eagle Scout candidate, Ben is required to perform a leadership serrvice project. After speaking with the director of resident activities and the director of environmental services at Elk Haven Nursing Home, it was decided that a raised garden would be a nice addition to the patio area.

ECCHS students attend district band festival

Five Elk County Catholic High School Students attended PMEA’s District 2 Band Festival at Youngsville High School on Feb. 5 -7. Pictured left to right are Lizzy Glatt, Ann Ordiway, Kathryn Nicklas, Lexi Knight, and Rachel Glatt will spend three days rehearsing with students from around the Northwestern area. Auditions for Regional band will take place on the first day before practices begin. Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) serves the schools and communities in Northwestern Pennsylvania, offering opportunities for students to be challenged with the next level of performance.

The Blast in the Burg 4 took place Friday evening at Memorial Field in Johnsonburg. Shown are the Vanguard Cadets, out of Santa Clara, Calif., performing their 2013 show "The Art of War." First place was awarded to Blue Devils B of Concord, Calif. with the Cadets taking home second place followed by Genesis from Edinburg, Texas in third place, Music City of Nashville, Tenn. in fourth place and the Blue Saints from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada in fifth place. The international award was presented to the Taipei Yuehfu corp from Taiwan.

Paving work continues on SR 255

Paving work continues on the southbound lanes of SR 255 between Kallas Road and Tractor Supply. Crews were working near Comfort Lane on Wednesday afternoon and will continue to work in the area during the remainder of the week.

Day campers visit Elk Country Visitor Center

The Keystone Elk Country Alliance was excited to host Memorial Parks Day Camp Tuesday at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette. The youngsters started off a fun day with a trail walk where they learned about the Center and the grounds lead by Conservation Education Specialist, Nicole Meyer. Part of their day was spent with an educational hands on talk about elk, antlers, pelts and the history of the herd which is celebrating its 100th anniversary of the restoration of elk in Pa.
