ECCHS honors winter sports athletes

Elk County Catholic High School held its annual Winter Athletic Awards Program on Wednesday evening, with the event getting underway at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
The program got underway with an invocation by Fr. Ross Miceli followed by a brief address by Athletic Association President John Dippold and several acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub, who also served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

SMA's Allie Wonderling medals at PIAA "AA" diving competition

St. Marys Area sophomore Allie Wonderling brought home a medal from the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships held at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.
On Saturday Wonderling placed fifth in the Class AA diving competition with a total of 378.95 points in the finals.

Homer-Center ends Crusader season with 47-45 win

The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team saw their season come to an end Friday night at Clarion University's Waldo Tippin Gymasium as the Homer-Center Wildcats edged the Crusaders by a 47-45 score in the opening round of the PIAA Class A Tournament.
While both teams had 17 field goals, the Wildcats were 9 of 18 from the foul line while Elk Catholic was seven of 19 from the sin strip.

Elkers advance with 62-32 win over Eisenhower

When the dust settled Friday night, the Ridgway Elkers (21-6) were the lone District 9 Class A team still alive in the state playoffs.
With Elk County Catholic (23-5) and Johnsonburg (23-5) on the losing end, it was Ridgway's Jeremy Breier who played like a season veteran Friday night, scoring 29 points en route to a 62-32 victory over Eisenhower in the opening round of the PIAA Class A boys' basketball playoffs.

Lincoln Park ends Johnsonburg season in first round

An emphatic statement was made in the second quarter by Lincoln Park Friday night.
There would be no celebration at the Leopards’ expense this year.
Lincoln Park outscored Johnsonburg 35-13 in the second quarter en route to a 96-46 win over the Rams Friday night at North Hills High School in the first round of the PIAA Class A boys basketball playoffs.

Lady Dutch capture District 9-AA swim championship

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch swim and dive team captured the District 9-AA team championship on Saturday as they finished the meet with a total of 387 points. The meet was held at the St. Marys Area High School Natatorium.
Clearfield was second with 319 points followed by Bradford with 298 and Brookville 81.
In the boys team race, Clearfield won the team title with 410 points followed by St. Marys 341, Brookville 155 and Bradford 136.

Elkers beat Crusaders 48-41 for District 9-A championship

The Ridgway Elkers captured the District 9 Class A boys basketball championship Saturday night by defeating the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 48-41 score in the title game played at Clarion University's Tippin Gymnasium.

Crusaders down Rams to reach 9-A championship game

The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team advanced to the District 9 Class A championship game by defeating the Johnsonburg Rams by a 66-47 score Wednesday night at Clarion University.
The Crusaders were able to take advantage of a poor shooting night by the Rams. Johnsonburg was 15 of 53 from the field for 28 percent while Elk Catholic was 20 of 38 for 61 percent. Elk Catholic was seven of 17 from behind the three-point arc while the Rams wee three of 29.

Former Dutch wrestling coach, Wayne Fordoski, inducted into Hall of Fame

Former St. Marys Area wrestling coach Wayne Fordoski was one of seven individuals inducted into the District 9 Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday night, during a ceremony held prior to the AA and AAA finals at the District 4/9 Wrestling Championships at Clarion University.
Each year, the District 9 Chapter of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association (PWCA) recognizes inductees for their "outstanding achievements and contributions as wrestlers, coaches, and contributors to the sport of wrestling."

Dutch wrestlers win D4/9 AAA team title

The St. Marys Area Dutch wrestling team claimed the team title at the District 4/9 AAA Wrestling Championships at Clarion University on Saturday, edging District 4's Jersey Shore 161.5-157.5 in the final team standings.
St. Marys also had 11 wrestlers finish on the podium: 160-pound champion Bill Gabor; runners-up Ray Dent, Tyler Yetzer, and Josh Cameroni; third-place finishers Kyle Pecht, Alex Feldbauer, and Derek Taylor; and fourth-place finishers Cameron Resch, Willie McGonnell, DJ Salinas, and Mike Wolfel.
