Lady Crusaders rally past Curwensville in extra innings

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders were one strike away from starting their season 0-2 after giving up the lead late in Wednesday afternoon's contest against the Curwensville Lady Tide. Instead, a single by Michaela Cashmer drove in pinch runner Emily Evers to send the game into extra innings tied at 6-all. With the momentum back in their favor, ECC was able to keep Curwensville off the board in the top of the eighth and drive in the winning run in the home half of the inning to pick up their first win of the season, 7-6.

SMA track teams split home opener with Punxsy squads

The St. Marys Area track and field teams opened their dual meet season Tuesday by playing host to the Punxsutawney squads.
The Lady Dutch downed the Lady Chucks 75-66 while the Chucks beat the Dutch 102-39.

Facing a three-run deficit early in Wednesday afternoon's game, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders rallied to defeat the Ridgway Elkers 5-3 in a contest that was the season opener for both teams.

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team opened their season Tuesday by hosting the DuBois Central Lady Cardinals at Benzinger Park.
DuBois Central came away with a 7-5, 11 inning victory over Elk Catholic.

Dutchmen open season with loss to Warren

Warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine on Tuesday afternoon was no April Fool's Day joke. The weather was finally nice enough for baseball, and the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen opened their 2014 season as they faced the Warren Dragons at Berwind Park, which hosted its first baseball game in May 1914 and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this season. Though the Dragons recorded a 15-2 victory in five innings, the Dutchmen were happy to at least be outside and playing baseball. Their previous three scheduled games had all been cancelled due to lingering winter weather.

ECCHS honors winter sports athletes

Elk County Catholic High School held its annual Winter Athletic Awards Program on Wednesday evening, with the event getting underway at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
The program got underway with an invocation by Fr. Ross Miceli followed by a brief address by Athletic Association President John Dippold and several acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub, who also served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

SMA's Allie Wonderling medals at PIAA "AA" diving competition

St. Marys Area sophomore Allie Wonderling brought home a medal from the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships held at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.
On Saturday Wonderling placed fifth in the Class AA diving competition with a total of 378.95 points in the finals.

Homer-Center ends Crusader season with 47-45 win

The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team saw their season come to an end Friday night at Clarion University's Waldo Tippin Gymasium as the Homer-Center Wildcats edged the Crusaders by a 47-45 score in the opening round of the PIAA Class A Tournament.
While both teams had 17 field goals, the Wildcats were 9 of 18 from the foul line while Elk Catholic was seven of 19 from the sin strip.
